Early Marantz Model 1 questions

Hi Members,

I recently bought an early model 1, it has the 3x 12AX7 tube design but still the old faceplate font (Metropolis) and bakelite knobs. It did not come with the power supply. It worked perfectly on an aftermarket power supply the seller had. Pictures enclosed.

According to my knowledge I place it around serial 3xxx. It does not have a serial number, not on and in the chassis. The Model 1 started at serial 3000 and it must be a very early one giving the Bakelite knobs and the fact that the old style of faceplate is still used, later ones had brass knobs and 2 fonts, after that aluminum knobs. I took a look at the main caps; these appear to be Goodall instead of Sprague bumblebees. Not common in the Model 1 or Model 7 but common in the power amps (Model 2, 5 and 8b as coupling caps).

I have only seen one other unit like this, it was for sale on eBay not too long ago with a bent faceplate. It also didn't have a serial and the same Goodall caps. May be anyone knows about this series? Or maybe it was repaired by the Marantz comp. in the 1960s and they used what was on hand...

We will do a technical and cosmetical restoration on this unit. I have bought new suspensions for the tube assembly. Also bought 3x EBY 9-pin tube shields. Will give it 3 fresh TF 12AX7.

The power knob does not work (always on) - I expect this is dirt build-up in the switch. Had this on a Model 7 too, will open and clean with Isopropyl alcohol, anyone had the same problem?

My question: Since there is no power supply, I would like to know if somebody tried this/know about this. I have a Model 8 serial 1624. It is an early model 8 with a Power supply outlet. Would it be possible to power the Model 1 with the outlet of the Model 8 until I find another original power supply?

Very nice. It looks pretty clean too. Did it come with the tube shields, or were they missing? Tubesandmore sells them at a reasonable price. You can even get them in colors like gold, red, etc.
That preamp is a great start for a really nice mono system.
There are lots of nice mono tube amps to choose from. Including clone kits of Dynaco mono amps like Dynakit sells.

Hi. I got vintage ones on eBay. Same brand then other Marantz units like the 7 and 10B. I have a pair of Model 2s I am looking to power. Now my Model 7 powers the 2s.

Finding an original power supply will be tough. They do come up - but very infrequently.

The courtesy socket on a Model 8 supplies about 430v, 12.6v and 6.3 v ... the Consolette starts off needing about 300v and the way the heaters are set up in series about 20v. So, not directly compatible at all.

You will have to do some modifications for it to work. I would probably just build a separate supply. What happened to the after market PS it was originally attached to at time of purchase?

Hi Kcin, Thank you so much for your explanation. I was always wondering why the power outlet was installed on the Model 8. Anyway, I will leave it as is then and will wait till I find an original power supply. I know it will be difficult but I will find one in the end.

The aftermarket one was returned to the owner as he needed it. It was a box made in the 1980s that powered 2 Model 1s at the same time with a transformer and some selenium rectifiers on the inside.

Today I bought this piece of info about the early model 1 which co firms its existence. It is from an Hifi magazine. Says 'New tape monitor switch' but still shows the old bakelite knobs and first style wood sideskirts and grille.
