I got this from a guy who got it in a trade. It was filthy, but a little cleaning worked wonders.
My question is, does anyone recognize it. I suspect it is very early, but I can't find any real info.
If anyone knows anything about it, I'd appreciate it a lot if you could share.

That is a version of a Series 1 PL400, how many heat sink fins? I think the amps with only four fins are the earliest ones, eight fins were later. Pictures of the top and back? Not sure about the black face plate though. Series 1 was fully discrete, Series 2 had an ompamp in the front end and LEDs for meters.

I never saw a black one when they first came out - my guess is someone had them repainted black (maybe with good reason). Hard to tell if it is paint or anodizing - if it were factory I think it would be anodized, but that's just a guess.

It has only four fins and no op amps. It is hand wired (maybe they all were?) and no op amp. The output transistors look to have been replaced. The left and right channels are different. I'm pretty sure the front panel is painted, not anodized. I'll take some pictures of the top and back when the sun comes up.

Did you add the light? If it's a homebrew faceplate, I wonder where the stickers came from. They are substantial, not flimsy, and show no signs of pealing.
I had an original back in the day, and to me it was better looking than this one. Can't imagine painting it.
The rest of it is also painted black. I redid the top and bottom panels, because they were so easy to remove.
