Early Sansui integrateds, big ADS speakers, and power amps...

Also I agree with you, esp with the cap-coupled amps there's less leeway to run loudness, I've found that to be true with the 4000.

wow, that's a lot of EQ. Interesting & useful comparisons though.

I never use loudness anyway, don't like what it does to the sound. Except at very low volumes.

I usually bypass the EQ too, if the amp has a "source direct" switch.

But hey, everyone has their preferences & do what you like!

I am just amazed -

I put the AU-888 in the closet. Will be putting it up for sale with its accompanying TU-888. Took the 555a out to the living room as a stand-in for the 7700, which is going to need some serious restoration. But that's not going to be for a while, so I thought I'd A/B the 7700 against the 222. Same method as before, level-matched with loudness on.

None of my tests are blinded, but they practically are - I never remember which button corresponds to which amp when I start a new comparison. I seriously thought the 222 was the 7700, because of how full the sound is. Fantastic highs, full mids, MEATY lows. It's making the 7700 sound anemic by comparison. I mean, sure, you might say well yeah, cap-coupled, but recall I just finished comparing with the 555a, and prior to that I found that the 777 was pretty close to the 222. I suppose I should throw the 777 in there too, but I'm a bit fatigued, and it's besides the point, since the 777 is going to my friend's house.

I'm only half-joking when I say I'm considering just replacing all my amps with 222s...

it's not too bad: once you pull the whole amp apart everything is easy to access

except I found the tone ctrl board is tough to get to. I stalled out there

I think I'm gonna run it by the local tech and see if he's willing to do a recap.

Today I'm in the living room, having replaced the 888 with the 555a, and the KEF 104/2s with new-to-me L710s, listening to music that has no right to sound so smooth. SO SMOOTH.

Great reading thank you for this!

I've got an AU-222 and i've always been tempted to replace it with higher spec Sansuis like AU-777 or one of the x700 or x900 series.

But now you've got me wondering if I just don't bother and enjoy my 222! It has no problems driving my Yamaha NS-1000M speakers.

Mine has a bit of a hiss when nothing is playing - any idea what might be the cause?
Tempted to recap and refresh mine. I see there's some kits on ebay which already have the parts all together in a neat bundle. I'm competent with a soldering iron but never worked on amps so will take it very slow.
