eaten tape

Hey there fellas, have a quick tape question. I know eaten tapes is a common problem, but my latest experience has me flummoxed. I have a 70's Sharp Record player/radio/cassette recorder, and usually works fine. after not using the cassette recorder for a couple years, I tried it out and it keeps eating my tapes! I've cleaned it with 90% isopropyl alcohol, beut the tapes are eaten almost immediately, as the take up reel doesnt move when I hit play. However, it rewinds and fast forwards just fine. Any ideas?

Rubber on the idler tire is dried out or gone. Bet it needs belts too. Does it rewind normally or does it slow down as it progresses?

Time to use a "rubber rejuvenator" on the rubber idler. Just helped someone two weeks ago with a similar problem.

Just do a "search" on this site.
Good luck and enjoy.....

It will fix it for a while. Eventually you will want to replace the idler and capstan roller as well as the belts while you are at it.
Glad you got it working!

What fixed it? People need to remember to say what the solution was if it wasn't provided by a previous poster in the same thread!
