ebay and shipping items?

What's the amount you're comfortable spending on ebay, or any auction site really, and having something shipped to you?

less than $50/ $50 / $100 / $500 / $1000 / more than $1000

Just curious.

I recently spent over $1000 and I'm a little nervous. :sigh:

The seller has several hundred feedbacks and it's 100% - but most are from sellers, not all that many from buyers.

He's been in contact about shipping etc., so it looks legit - I was just wondering if other people go through this kinda thing.

I have bought and sold items over $1000 with no problem. I do check feedback and correspond with the other party before committing, though.
 
I'm with RichPA on this one. Reputable seller with good feedback (especially regarding packaging and shipping) and I'm OK with it.

Hope it works out!
 
I've had too many....."well, it was working before".....to spend big $$$ on an e-bay item.
Even from sellers with lots of positive feedback.

As long as there is a credit card involved, I don't worry. The protection of using a credit card helps a lot. I've almost never had a problem and I've never had to pay for anything I didn't get or that turned out to be bogus.

Paypal is a little wonky though about resolution but it worked fine. That just happened and the seller seems to be trying to straighten out the mess...but I'min the clear.
 
It's always a crapshoot whether it's problems with the seller or delivery.
All you can do is weigh the options and hope for the best but you can minimize some of the risks.

I look at the Description:
Do they answer all my questions?
Well written, intelligent?
Pictures front and back and internal even better.
Do they seem to have experience with audio or deal mainly in knick-knacks?
If my questions are not answered I ask about condition such as: all lights meters work? Stereo light work? How will it be packed? Marked Fragile top and sides? Tracking?

I look at their Feedback:
Over 99%?
Feedback mentions great packing?
As described or good communication?

I wouldn't even be willing to pay $20. Ebay scares the crap out of me!
It's a real crap-shoot even with positive feedback.
If you know the seller and/or they happen to be an AK'r then you don't need to worry.
 
As a buyer paying with paypal, you have little to worry about. The rules are so stacked in your favor that if there is any problem (real or not), you are protected. IME, selling is a lot riskier because of the same rules.
 
I have had good luck with Ebay, I have made approximately 75 transactions since I got my account now (about 2 years) and almost all have been good, except one.

I am like you though, where when I make a purchase I do have it in the back of my mind until I receive it and make sure it's working properly. Plus, almost all of mine are electronics purchases, so it's definitely easier to have a transaction go sour.
 
I paid $2600 on eBay for a pair of 'restored' Sansui CA/BA-3000 units and had them shipped halfway across the country. I would do it again. I also have shipped a Nak PA-7II to the middle of nowhere Alaska for $400 (shipping alone!!) - that guy really wanted it! He was also happy.
 
Yeah, I've done some buying and selling up to around the $500 range, and mostly I've had good experiences (a few minor purchases aside) - but once I hit the Paypal payment button, I had that moment of, "Hey! I just clicked away a grand! Sure hope it gets here."
 
I wouldn't worry so much of the shipping but rather the item gets to you in solid condition. I bought a receiver a year ago and it took like 3-4 weeks to arrive by UPS. Avoid them if you can. When it arrived it was damaged. There was a few dents in the receiver and the packaging was just destroyed. Anyway I would have complained to UPS but I thought it just was not worth it all the trouble I went through just to get it here. They were so bad in their communication I called the office and they told me my package was still in their facility but was actually on it's way for delivery since I was planning to pick the item up.

Are you also afraid to cross a busy street? eBay is not a crapshoot, just use common sense. The only thing I would not buy on eBay is an automobile. Too much money involved, for so many unknowns...
 
Hey, for the Canadians out here,
I'm going to Europe in october and plan to purchase a few things there as many great speaker cables, interconnects etc are available when they are really hard to get here, and anyway I'll get that much cheaper :)
If you think of something not very expensive (like under $75) nor very heavy (I'm travelling by plane and I already plan to bring back things from home) that you'd like, pm me.
I am in Montreal but I assume that shipping intra-Canada is nothing compared to even a US to CA > just paid $43,38 for a $39 order from parts-express last week :(((

I don't buy anything used sight unseen except DVDs and CDs (through Amazon), especially used electronics and the like. $100 is a king's ransom to me, so I need to be wise. I don't know what I would do if I shelled out say $250 for something and it arrived broken or not near what was described and I was left on the hook. That's a ton of money to chance with. On ebay, one can not check before buying.
The descriptions can be very misleading either by intent or unintentional. I see the same on CL, but at least one can physically check out the item by arrangement and if the seller is unwilling then you know something is wrong and you move on.
Common sense doesn't seem to be enough to deal with ebay. I know there are many good transactions on ebay everyday, but the buyer has to be willing to take a lot of risk and have the capital to do so.
On the flipside incidently, I find selling on ebay is something I'll never understand as well, speaking for myself.
I have enough common sense to even spare some, but I think if an ebay expert were to sit me down and walk me through how to navagate ebay and what to look for when buying I may get a better understanding of it and thus feel safer.
