Econo-Waves on Hartford CL

AudioKarma makes it to the for sale section of CL! KLH 17 E-Waves here.

These are a newly completed pair of KLH-17 speakers that have been modified to the popular AudioKarma.org web site's econo-wave type.

Not mine, no affil, etc.

I highly doubt that. The seller is a member here and I would suspect that he merely did these as an exercise and to, perhaps, take some measurements.

If you know the guy and have insider knowledge of his motivation for selling, great; I don't. My comment wasn't meant as an indictment of the seller or of the speakers. It was a declaration. I wonder whether these speakers lived up to his expectations. This isn't just idle curiousity, I've considered building some myself and don't wish to end up with something that I will be willing to sell at a loss.

Although the seller and I have never met, my assumption is based upon attained knowledge of his work. Based upon that knowledge of the seller, I would assume these would attain, or even surpass, Zilch's own parameters for build quality. Take that for what you will.

Again, I have no affiliation with the product nor the seller. I am merely passing on knowledge that non-subscribers may (or may not) be privy to and these opinions are my own.

My opinion is to become an AK Subsciber.

If you don't want to "take a loss," don't do it. A lot of these mods and experiments we jump into are NOT for financial gain. Most of the time you would consider yourself luck to break even or sell for a small loss. :yes:

Evidently I am not expressing myself very well. I do not know any of the persons mentioned in this thread, nor do I know any of the persons who have posted in this thread. I have no personal knowledge of the speakers in question.

For several reasons which certainly include the above mentioned lack of personal knowledge, I am casting no aspersions on any of the above persons or speakers or speaker designs. I apologize for any lack on my part which led anyone to feel otherwise.

If I were to undertake this project, financial gain would not be my goal; great sounding speakers would be my goal. If I realized my goal, I wouldn't sell the speakers at all, but would keep them to use. I especially wouldn't sell them for a loss.

I understand that there are a variety of reasons that could induce a far away stranger to sell his speakers. She who must be obeyed, reversal of fortune, and poor sound are three possibilities which come immediately to mind. I'm sure there are other possibilities.

The only possibility for him, which could affect my decision, is the way they sound. Please understand, I realize that tastes differ and I am not intimating that these speakers sound bad. It's just that if someone with personal experience thinks that they do, I would like to hear what prompted that opinion.

Stereofan, horns and compression drivers are not for everyone. There are also many types of constant directivity and directed output horns. You then have the common diaphragm materials - mylar, aluminum, titanium, selenium, etc. All have their own distinct characteristics, mannerisms, and sound flavor.

It is not whether a E-wave sounds good or bad, it is whether you like it. For that price, I would buy these KLHs immediately - and I don't paticularly care for the selenium driver. I like and own many horn speakers, but the two E-wave speaker efforts I have heard have struck me as being a bit forward and etched at the top end.

It could be they had not been dialed in, or the driver was a little to hot relative to the woofer, but I could tell where the mid kicked in.

I also don't care too much for the JBL titanium drivers either, so in my case the flavor of the top end plays an important part in my like/dislike of a good set of speakers. I also find some speakers that people swear by leave me cold - ie JBL L100s and Pioneer HPM 100s no longer live here.

If you are worried about $$$, I would definitely listen to three or four horn speakers, including an E-wave, before you jump. You lose money when you join a bandwagon, rather than buying based on an informed opinion.
