Edgarhorns and what else?

I am currently building some of the 300hz tractrix midrange Edgarhorns for some LE5-2s and was wondering if anyone else has used this setup? If so, what pairings worked or didn't for the lower frequency drivers/cabinets. I would love to find something that has a reasonable SAF and mates well to the Edgarhorns. Actually, I'd love to hear any experiences anyone has had with building or listening to these horns period. :scratch2:

There is not a finer type of speaker than the Tractrix Horn! Period. You are on the right track with these. I love hornloaded mid bass like the Altec Designs but for SAF you might be better off building (gag!) a set of powered bass cabs of moderate size. I have built several sets of the tractrix horn with Altec type mid bass and direct radiater sub bass cabs. These are BIG but nothing compares to the sound or the scale of the sound. Everything sounds full size. When you close your eyes and listen you would swear that the Tympani drums are right in your listening room and hear the sound of the Cello strings moving back and forth. You are no longer in the audience. You are the conductor. Good luck with your project. I'm sure you will love the results!

I used to use a set of Dr. Edgars saladbowls with various Altec and JBL 1" drivers. Very nice sounding horns. Used them above 700hz with Altec A5 bassbins.

First off, Thank you Paul, Red and Tom for the responses and the welcome. I am really encouraged by Paul and Tom's experiences. That definitely sounds like the direction I want to go (Altec type midbass cabinets and eventually I may integrate a ss powered sub. I think I could pull off the cabinets Tom has pictured or something similar. What would be your recommendation as to a model of midbass cabinet to look for or build? The only VOT cabinets I have seen in person were enormous! Yours appear much smaller and more workable. Also, if I could pick your brains some more, what would be your picks for a great value/sound ratio for an Altec/JBL or the likes, alnico woofer to use? Thanks much!
