It's psy-cat-delic!
Well . . . now I've done it. I just discovered that, for the most part, I can't tell the difference between a 320 bit rate mp3 and a 2800 bit rate flac from a 24/96 rip.
I used the ABX test from Foobar2000. Here are the dismal results:
Steely Dan Gaucho - Babylon Sisters -
File A: flac
File B: mp3 (done with Lame 3.98.4)
15:10:57 : Test started.
15:22:19 : 00/01 100.0%
15:26:02 : 00/02 100.0%
15:28:09 : 01/03 87.5%
15:31:00 : 01/04 93.8%
15:32:00 : 01/05 96.9%
15:32:59 : Test finished.
----------
Total: 1/5 (96.9%)
Dang! 97% probability that I was guessing . . . and you know what, I was.
Test 2:
Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms - Ride Across The River
File A: flac
File B: mp3
15:34:54 : Test started.
15:36:16 : 00/01 100.0%
15:36:55 : 00/02 100.0%
15:40:04 : 00/03 100.0%
15:40:47 : 00/04 100.0%
15:41:05 : Test finished.
----------
Total: 0/4 (100.0%)
Yikes! Even worse.
Test 3:
Bad Company - Bad Company - Bad Company
File A: flac
File B: mp3
15:44:33 : Test started.
15:46:35 : 01/01 50.0%
15:47:39 : 02/02 25.0%
15:49:50 : 03/03 12.5%
15:50:23 : 04/04 6.3%
15:51:32 : 04/05 18.8%
15:52:30 : 04/06 34.4%
15:53:30 : 05/07 22.7%
15:54:23 : 06/08 14.5%
15:54:42 : 07/09 9.0%
15:55:04 : 08/10 5.5%
15:55:16 : Test finished.
----------
Total: 8/10 (5.5%)
Yeah baby! I really could tell the difference between the two samples this time.
Aha! I thought. My ear is finally tuned into the differences now so I repeated the Dire Straits and Steely Dan tests but quit both after about 3 or 4 samples because I was getting the same results.
Babylon retest
A - Flac
B - mp3
15:59:13 : Test started.
15:59:58 : 01/01 50.0%
16:00:19 : 02/02 25.0%
16:00:42 : 02/03 50.0%
16:01:48 : 03/04 31.3%
16:02:43 : 03/05 50.0%
16:03:48 : 03/06 65.6%

16:05:34 : 05/09 50.0%
16:06:34 : 06/10 37.7%
16:07:10 : 06/11 50.0%
16:07:15 : Test finished.

Total: 6/11 (50.0%)
Still 50% probablility that I was guessing. Oh well.
Amazing, the two cuts that I thought would be the most distinctive due to production values were (for me) indiscernable in their differences and the one that I thought would be the most difficult was no challenge at all.
Just call me The Tin Eared Tin Horn from now on.
I'll probably test some more of my high quality rips, but I don't hold out any hope that the results will be different. Seems 320 is good enough for most of my listening.:tears:
