Elac 10f hum

Hey I picked up a classic elac 10f, it had a early sixties cart on it with an all metal body, and the headshell has what appears to be a ground strap attached to one the cart mounting screws. The cart was a goner, so I put in a more modern one, but it has a plastic body so no place to attach that ground strap, and, of course, I now have a slight ground hum. Any idea on how to solve this? Another place to attach this strap perhaps?

Try connecting the wire to one of the mounting screws/nuts. I've pulled up a ton of issues with this problem via Google, didn't read far enough though. Does this hum happen during playback also or just before/after? Someone with this table will chime in soon, I'm sure.

I think I saw a pic of where the ground wire connects to the back of the tonearm also.

The hum happens once the mute switch has been inactivated when the tonearm is over the record. The strap goes from the metal part of the headshell. On the old cart, it connected to one of the cart mounting screws but it was a metal cart. All the modern carts have plastic in that area so there’s really nothing to ground to.

I assume the "F" means if was in a Fisher console.

I have an Elac 10 (no suffix) and it has no ground strap. A 10H is the same table with a different motor - no other difference.

Could be that ground strap was as per requirement of being installed in Fisher consoles.

In my limited experience (10H and 40A) the ground issue I had was due to dirty RCA plugs. The table has no separate ground wire to the amp, instead grounding through the left RCA ring. I was able to clean the 10H RCAs, but the 40A RCAs were too far gone. On the 40A I cut off the plugs and soldered new plugs on the existing wire to solve it.

Another outside possibility could be the headshell/tonearm connections being tarnished. This would be my 2nd place to explore after the RCA plugs.

Oops I mistyped. It’s a 10h not a 10f.

I’ve deoxed the rcas and all headshell contacts and no joy.

It was suggested that I add a separate ground wire from the top plate when I was first troubleshooting my 40A. I did that and it eliminated the hum. Being a bit OCD, I wanted it to use the original ground scheme, so I replaced the rca's and removed the separate ground wire. Maybe you could try a separate ground wire?
