I have a 1971 Elac Miracord 50H II turntable that after a few minutes of run time, the motor begins to make a very loud whirring noise. I have pin pointed the sound to be coming directly from the motor, all of the other running gear is completely silent. This motor noise happens with or without the platter in place. Thinking it was just dry bearings or shaft, I lubricated the motor extensively, but nothing changed. I took the motor apart to inspect it further for obvious signs of wear and tear, but it looked like brand new inside and out and there was no signs of wear. So, I put it back together, and still the same thing happens. I see that within the motor casing, there aren't ball bearings guiding the shaft and armature, but instead, there are bronze bushings that are encased in a brass body (that sort of looks like a bearing from the outside) that the shaft rides in. In-between the brass body and the bronze bushing is a felt-like material that is saturated with oil for lubricating the shaft and bronze bushing. I'm wondering if the sound I'm hearing is the bushing spinning around within that brass/felt casing, when it's not supposed to?
Have any of you dealt with this before? What did you do? Shall I just replace the motor with another one if I can find it, or upgrade to another model of motor? HELP! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance...
