Elac Miracord 770H

I just picked up a Elac Miracord 770H at a garage sale this morning. Is anyone familiar with this turntable? It appears to be in very good condition. Year made? quality? I have done some searches online and haven't found a whole lot of information. Would really appreciate your thoughts. Thanks everyone.

I owned one for a while. Made in 1970-74. In my view, comparable to the good Dual tables of the era...and easier to work on.

Nice that it has pitch control, and I like the way they look.

Lots of threads here and at vinylengine.com. it will need some work to perform at its best (and as quietly as possible).

I have restored/repaired a number of ELAC decks. Generally, the old grease in the mechanisms becomes sticky and can cause operational problems...should be cleaned out and then re-lubed. Idler wheel is likely hardened, which will make the table noisier than it should be. It can be lightly sanded to get to a softer/grippier surface. One approach to doing so is mounting it in an electric drill and holding a piece of fine grit sandpaper at a right angle while it spins. It MUST stay perfectly round....so use light pressure. You are only trying to get the hardened, slick layer off. Alternatively, it can be rebuilt, or replaced if you can find a new one for that model.

Sometimes the motor bearings become noisy and need to be cleaned out and relubricated. Same for platter bearings.
 
 
A very fine automatic. While Duals have the aura of greatest desirability in the collector market, MIracords are fully their equals - the world isn't fair, and the Dual tonearms look better - more precise looking, lower mass looking, and perhaps better cosmetics. But in actuallity, the MIracord arms, while blocky looking, are pretty much equally good.
The 770H was Miracord's best table of the time, and it should sound very good. You are lucky to have picked one up.

Nat. This thing is heavy and solid. It sounds GREAT. I did no adjusting to it and it performs, as is, like a Champ. I hooked it up to a little 70's Fisher receiver that I also bought today just to get the turntable. I will have to say that little Fisher has one great little phono. The Tuner is better than my vintage Marantz 2238B and Pioneer SX-950. I am not very up to date on good turntables. My last turntable was a Pioneer PL-12 D that served me well for many years....simple basic deck that I could kick myself for getting rid of. Probably is sitting in a landfill.....shame shame on me. Anyway....do you have any idea of what ELAC Miracord is worth?. I paid $100.00 for the little receiver and the turntable.....so, I guess I got the turntable for $50.00.

The way to find approximate value is to look on completed sales on Ebay - that is what people actually paid, not what people ask.
Audio Karma has a policy against questions of value outside of the Dollars and Sense forum, so your question should be asked there. Were value questions allowed in other forums, they would take over, and would bias and pervert the responses to questions in those forums.
