I have a single that looks exactly like yours. It’s an EV Aristocrat lll.
If it’s original inside it should have a woofer and two horns.

For the life of me, I can't figure out why someone would mount the tone controls there. They've completely defeated the purpose of a corner horn cabinet, by making them unable to be placed in a corner.

I think there was supposed to still be enough space between the wall and speaker to adjust these. You wouldn't place them touching the corners.

I have one that has a three drivers in it but the other one only has two, the small tweeter and the woofer. I will probably just take the large horn out of the other and have a pair of two ways.
That's right. The two walls would touch the two sides adjacent to that back panel with the controls, leaving a triangular space. You'd just have to reach over the top of the cabinet and turn the knobs without looking at them. Which creates its own problems, I admit.
I have a pair of Aristocrats in walnut that are our daily listeners. One has a 12TRXB, the other has an SP12B with a T35 tweeter. Unless you listen carefully they sound remarkably similar.
I have a third Aristocrat (blond) that only as the SP12B. The plan is to find another T35 and the appropriate crossover and convert the 12TRXB cabinet into a two way with the SP12B to have a matched pair of walnut cabs, then use the blond with the TRXB in a sweet mono system.
These sound fantastic with a low powered single-ended tube amp.

The spacing between those angled panels and the wall is supposed to be 1"-4". It's a really awkward spot to put those controls, when they could have easily been put on the flat side just forward of where they are, and where they would be readily accessible. Those knobs probably stick at least 1.5". EV tone control knobs are big.

Yeah my University corner cabinet controls are on the flat side like you said.
