Electro Voice Sentry III information needed

The cabs are as mint as you can get from a 30+ year old speaker. The guy I'm getting them from got a set for free from a theater company, they had 2 sets. One set his buddy got and it too needed only one of the speakers re-foamed so he decided not to do it and subsequently took the speakers to his local salvation army and gave them up for free! So probably but not positive maybe the speakers are not a matched set since possibly the other speaker that was given away that needed the re-foam could have been the mate to the one that I'm getting needing the re-foam, if that makes any sense. At any rate I'm not sure weather all I need is a re-foam or in fact I may need a re-cone. Can anyone enlighten me on how I would be able to tell the difference. The foam is rotted away again on only one of the woofers.
Funny thing when I went to audition the speakers the dude had it hooked up so some 90s plastic amp playing some metal out of his mini ipod. Not exactly hifi but the speakers worked which was about all I could hope for. I'm paying $200 for the set - ya think thats a good deal?

Sounds like the speaker just needs a refoam, NOT a recone, in that case. If it's just the foam that's disintegrated, you can just replace the foam. Any good speaker repair shop should be able to do that, or you can do it yourself, if you have good dexterity...
I'd probably be prepared to do BOTH of them... if one is rotted, the other one isn't far behind (it's an aging issue, and ALL of those Sentry III speakers were made within a certain limited time-frame). Also, they'll sound more identical, if they're both refoamed at the same time.
$200 for the set? Sounds like a good deal to me, if all they need is refoaming!

Is that a foam surround or a fabric (corrugated) surround in the second picture (the one that does NOT need refoaming)? Looks like someone may have put an EVM15B type surround on that one. It's supposed to be foam, but the fabric should work OK (with the exception of not quite having as much low bass extension with it)...

Sentry III: take 2
Alrighy now, just hooked up my 2 new replacement woofers reconed and refoamed by a professional speaker shop into my Sentry III cabs. I picked up a matched pair of woofers off eprey with the exact same number stamped on the bottom of the magnet that match the original woofer. Got them at a real good price of $50 a piece plus shipping and they are like I said new cones and new foam.

I just hooked up one of my amps to take a listen and WOW these are beauties. Only hooked them up as a single amp powering all drivers and woofers and they sound absolutely friggin great.
In the queue is a Yamaha pro F1040E active crossover and a second Sansui AU-999 power amp that I am going to bi-amp the speakers with (2 AU-999s). I haven't yet picked up a pre-amp but have my eyes open on that aution site. Any one have any suggestions for a great pre-amp with a really good phono section, as I'm big into vinyl and also listen to CDs but prefer records for the obvious reasons.
I just finished re-soldering the one of the woofer wires going to the woofer in one of the speakers and now its all working superb. Since I had the inside crossover exposed I saw some pretty old caps and resistors and am also wondering if anyone has any experience re-caping a Sentry III or would have input on weather or not I would need to replace any parts in the crossovers. The speakers do sound way better than any speaker I've listened to to date but now I'm wondering if they could sound even better with updated internals.
The speakers are LOUD with the volume pot turned to the 9 o'clock poisition or 2 on the dial on the 999 and that is about half for the same volume on my other speakers, and the clarity oooo la la!

I was able to pick up a pair of 1823M drivers on ebay after I had one fail. They show up there occasionally.
If you have a driver and need it repaired, I had good luck with the Speaker Doctor in Charlotte, NC. They repaired one 1823M driver I had. They also refoamed the woofers in my Sentry III and Sentry V speakers a few years back. Website is http://www.speakerdoctor.com/

I just located the two 1823M's for 95 bucks. I'm not sure who yet to get my woofers reconed. Some services say that E-V no longer has kits available. Some tell me know problem, 100 bucks apiece. And Telex says no problem but wouldn't give a price. I'm thinking telex as they are an authorized E.V repair center.

Yup those are the correct numbers. I stumbled on the woofers and made the seller an offer of $50 and she took it. Cost $40 to ship and came in boxes that looked fresh from the shop that reconed and refoamed them. The woofers were never used after the rebuild and had a date of 06/07/2006 with the speaker repair shop address and phone etc. Blind squirrel theory there. The seller was selling a bunch of other EV stuff and I happened to look thru thier other listings and found the woofers.

Bob thats great to hear that you are so impressed by their sound. I have a few to many projects on the go, and have not got mine up and running yet. I will
probably change out the caps in the x overs prior to putting them into service.
In my case they will be judged against the Infinity RS-2.5,s. Since both are rather large I don,t think there will be space for both, on the other hand, I could just keep expanding into the rest of the house.

Well I have an exra set of 15" EV woofers, since I bought the already rebuilt ones. Same numbers - one needs refoamed and the other has cloth/cardboard "foam" and is in good working condition.
Now i have to figure out how to get those puppies to the second floor listening room. Yikes.... thoughts of getting run over by a run-away speaker is a real possibility at +150 lbs. per speaker. I guess I will set up the bi-amp system on the first floor then move everything after its up and running the way I like it.

I hear ya, my wife almost got run over on the way to the basement sliding then down the carpet. I was quite worried for a second or two.
Wow, you guys are doing good. Will send mine in this week. I'm glad to hear that yours is impressing Bob. I'm also glad to hear that they can be reconed. Do you both think you got new voice coils when they were reconed ?

I can't say for sure if the voice coil was replaced or not I would have to call the speaker shop, which I may do. I can now tell why everyone says the AU-999 has a mellow tube like sound now as I can actually hear the mellow nature of the amp. Before I could not and they actually didn't sound any where near as good with my Infinity SM-255 speakers. These speakers sound equally good at low and high volume and are very effcient.

My version has the clip indicator light and the tweeter saver. My question is, "Has anyone ever had their's turned up high enough to see these lights light or even began to?" I've had my units about 3 or 4 years now and have had these cranking above 150 w.p.c and never have seen them even began to light. Maybe if I had them outside I could, but my ears can't handle any more power than that inside as these are rather efficient. Anyone?
