Electro-Voice Sentry III Speakers - retail?

vintage cltr

Active Member
Ok, I have guy local here trying to sell a set of Electro-Voice Sentry III Speakers, with the EQ. They look to be in fantastic shape.

Here's the question, he has them listed for $2500? Personally, I think its too high, but they do not come up for sale too often.

Is there anything special to look for?

I really hate to ask this question, but what would the going Craigslist price be?

I've seen them around $1k on CL a few times. I personally wouldn't pay any more than that for a pair without the external crossover box. With the box I may be inclined to go $1500 if everything was cherry.

They are the end all, be all speaker for me but I would have a very hard time paying that kind of money for them. Especially with such fantastic speakers like the Klipsch CF-4 being offered for so much less.

I saw those too .... $2500 is pretty steep.

That's the wrong eq box for those, it should be the SEQ not the interface A. The interface A went with the Interface A speakers, the B with the B etc..

That said, these speakers are amazing.... They sound soooooo good :music:

I drove 500 miles a few months ago and picked up mint pair that a guy had in his studio since 1982.

I got the speakers, the SEQ equalizer, a JBL/UREI frequency divider, a BGW 750 amp for the LF and a Hafler P120 amp for the mids and HF..... for ....wait for it .....$1000... Yes I feel blessed.

Go listen to them and make the guy an offer, they really are an exceptional speaker.

I had a pair of Klipsch Belle's..... They are in storage now :D

yeah, i know of the ones you bought. that was a great deal!!!

i know the guy selling these, but i was unaware of the of the EQ difference. that's good know.

here's the funny part, look at the ad again and look at the last picture closely, on the top of the brouchere there is a price of $1700 listed....

can you say "wanna-be" flipper?

Wtf .... You should offer him $1701.

Listening to to mint copy of Zappa's Hot rats I just bought for $3 .... These speakers sound so sweet. Not trying to rub it in, I swear:D

I won mine through ebay auction for $350 about 5-6 years ago. it was pick up only and yes I am rubbing it in

There is more than 1 model EQ for the III's that will work at least 2 anyways. And they can be used without
an EQ or tri-amped and go active.

Yes I have some also.

All most forgot, in 1979 the Sentry III's per pair with the Seq were $1800 list price from Stereo buyers guide
more that the Altec 19's by a couple hundred.

Wow Perchdog ! $350 . Now that's a major score. Nice job.

If you ever want to sell them I'm not to far from you. :D

A friends father was given a pair after a presentation he gave when he worked for Electro voice back in the 70's. My friend has them stashed in a closet collecting dust ... I need to go hook them up for him :music:

I know this is a dated thread but I just located what appears to be a near mint pair of Sentry III's with the correct SEQ equalizer, the bottom port plugs installed, new surrounds on the 15's and all the interior cabinet seals replaced. They look like new in the pictures the seller sent me and even the front grilles look pristine. We talked about the price among a few other things audio and not audio related, I should be able to get them for around $1,300 and if all is perfect with no repairs needed I don't think that's unfair with the SEQ in today's economy. I'm sure I can get my $$$ back if I'd ever try to sell them later on. I go to look at them Tuesday.

I picked up a pair in mint condition with the SEQ from the original owner about 2 years ago and I love them. He bought them new in 73. He's 86 now and comes by occasionally to hear them. He also has a pair of interface A with the eq box that I would like to get someday also. Hope you get them they're real nice. Good luck!

I think eventually I got the box, it's around here somewhere.

The woofer is definitely the weak link on these, again I have never tried the SEQ box. I instead replaced the bottom end with JBL scoop and Altec driver. To me it sounds fantastic and it surely would be difficult to top the performance of the mid, tweet and x-over.

I will end up going back to original config someday as I still have cabs and etc. Good luck, I think it is a very fair deal

wow!!! they look great i think you will like them a lot. good luck and let us know what you think of them. I've never seen blonde either.

I'm thinking of making a base with casters that the existing EV base will drop onto. I've always gotten better sound with band gear when it's off the floor and my Sentry 500's are at ear level in my studio. Once my BGW 750B is redone it'll make the perfect amp for driving those 15's and I have other BGW & Crest amps to audition for the high end. I'm curious to run scans on them with my RTA to see what the response curves in straight & bi-amped modes look like.

Apparently the blonde Sentry III's are extremely rare since nobody I've come across has ever seen another pair of them either. Even though I'll never part with these I wonder what they might fetch in Germany or Japan where they're even more prized than here?

Was there ever mention of EV producing a blonde finish in the MK 1?

My Sentry's only sounded good when running Bi-amp with level controls on the amps
had to be issues with the crossovers. In this mode there was not a lack of bass!
