Electro Voice T35 vs T35B?

I am interested in people's opinions of the two EV tweeters. I am reworking the driver component of my Aristocrats so that each cabinet will have a SP12, 16 ohm, and either a T35 or T35B tweeter, 16 ohm.

I have two T35B and one T35, so I would have to buy another T35 if I were to use them rather than the B version.

I will build a new X36 crossover for these. This crossover uses a 2.84 cap to crossover at 3,500 Hz. Might I be better off crossing over at a higher frequency with the SP12 drivers?

3500hz is the low end, 5k might be better. Really depends on how you like the sp12. The 35b is about 4db less efficient - not an insignificant amount, requires about twice the power for the same output. and has a much smaller magnet. I would generally put an lpad on it anyways though, so if you plan your crossover correctly i think you can use the 35b just fine. You can always swap the t35 into one and see if it's any improvement. Both were used with the x36 crossover. Sound should be very similar.

What does your cabinet have for a tweeter opening? Some have single bolt mounts for the t35b, some have 4 bolt mounts for a t35.
 
As I remember the molds for the T-35 were becoming compromised, so the T-35 was was brought back up to molding specs. Was the main reason for the change. for the T-35 to the B model. When Klipsch discovered these issues they started having an dependent OEM manufacturers start making their tweeters. I have forgotten the new designation. But thats one reason serious Klipsch owners turned to Bill Crites for up dates that Klipsch wasn't willing to use at first. I was never happy with the T-35 in any form as in rolled off the highs to soon and it low power handling of only 5 watts RMS. When Disco and electronic music came along T-35's were failing all to often, whether used by Klipsch, Ev or others. There was a time in the 90's when Great Plains Audio was making T-35 and T-350 diaphragms as the Oriental diaphragms replacements did not hold up well at all and there were a large numbers of owners who needed replacement diaphragms.

I am going to build new crossovers to the X36 specs and will include an L-pad. For now I will stick with the original 3500 hz cutoff.

The T35 and T35B use the same horn, so mounting won't be a problem.
 
The T35 has a stronger magnet than the T35B, which gives it better top-octave frequency response extension. The T35 goes higher than the T35B, before it rolls off.

I'd use the T35- or the T350 (which has an even stronger magnet).

In any case- a higher crossover point may sound good with the SP12 and the T35. I'd be inclined to leave the crossover coils in the X36 alone, and just use smaller caps. Maybe something like 2.2uf rather than 2.84uf. That would serve to attenuate the lower treble a bit, in relation to the upper treble- which can improve the perceived treble extension.

I appreciate your opinion but my question was/is specifically about Electro Voice tweeters.

Thanks, Gordon. This is exactly what I am wondering. 2.2 would cross them over at 4,500 Hz rather than 3,500 Hz.

I will start with the Bs, since I have them. Swapping tweeters is easy enough on the Aristocrats. I can always change them later. I certainly would like a pair of the T350s!

Understood. I should've added that I say that as a guy that still runs T350's...which don't play as high as either of the current OEM replacements. I understand historical preservation--that's why I have the T350's--but were it for daily usage, I'd choose the newer offerings (as I did in a set of Cornies). Most play both higher and lower than the T35 family. For the benefit of others starting "blind", look hard at Mr. Ault's *mahl offerings (or see feedback in the AK subforum). For speakers that don't play very low, the extra HF can "unbalance" them to replace T35 parts, but that's a different problem.
