Electrohome CS-400.

Well to bring up an old thread I have one of these even a little more rarer than the 400...
It's brand new, got lucky..
Just throwing it out there as info is pretty scarce on these..

I was raised in Kitchener Ont. (home of Electrohome) . To my knowledge most of their stuff was manufactured there. The Planar stuff was their last kick at the rapidly changing can of electronics (they had missed the boat by aligning their electronics with their cabinet making division (consoles) in the 70's. Deilcraft (the cabinet making wing) actually went furniture only for a bit to try to survive. I believe Planar was the last ditch effort at trying to have their home electronics division survive as well. Many local stories about everything on the halted production line being sold of at cents on the dollar. Many people got units and parts to assemble many more units. They were well made but never made their mark.
As an aside : the area has a strong, but not well known, history of consumer electronics : it is where Paul Barton (Psb) was raised and started out , Marsland , Cambridge speakers and many more. I'd put the unit as pre '75
 
Mitsubishi did manufacture some later Electrohome gear in that era. Likely is what you have. ElectroHome had many of the same issues that Zenith, RCA, Magnavox and other US console makers had. Changing tastes, Asian imports being more prevalent, and the remaining console makers making cheaper and cheaper products. I'd peg this Electrohome receiver as 1971-1974 era by it's styling.

Very interesting looking online these seem to be pretty rare, maybe they only made a limited number before dropping the line..?
I've only ever seen 1 for sale on CAM, and it was in rough shape..
Mine is a 9/10 for sure..not a mark on it or even dust inside..

I would think TAMRADIO. The E-HOME's Tuning dial looks suspiciously similar to the BOSE Spatial control Receiver both in font. and the turquoise color from the lights. A close look at the boards may reveal the manufacturer.

As someone pointed out earlier in the thread Electrohome made most of their own units in the timeframe the CS-400 appears to have been produced. Unlike RS, it would be a mistake to presume automatically that the model was outsourced from Japan as it bears many very strong similarities to the Planar receivers which I know were definitely made in Canada. That these models look superficially like some Japanese designs is just a sign of everyone copying each other and trying to be "fashionable". I''m not saying the CS-400 isn't of Japanese origin, just that t'aint necessarily so.

Please do, it will be interesting to see what lurks in there. Electrohome was still a big manufacturer at the time, at least by Canadian standards.

As to loading pics. You can load (I think) five at once, but they have to be selected one at a time and then will all load at once.

I'm not enough of an expert to say what origin the boards etc. are in the pics, though to my unpracticed eye they don't look unlike other parts of N. American origin that I've seen. I'll have to take a look when I have a minute and see if I can turn up some interior shots of the Planar receivers to see if they are similar or not. From the exterior they are to me at any rate.
 
I don't know if the later planar series boards were made in Kitchener : but I do know when Electrohome closed that hundreds of planar components in various states of assembly were sold off from the factory cheap /right down to circuit boards ........ so it might make sense that the boards were manufactured elsewhere and assembled here / or manufactured here....... the units,at least, were put together here at a minimum ...... keep in mind that they also manufactured CRT's here until the early 80's (certainly until the late 70's ) .... so they were still manufacturing components well into the time that most other North American electronics companies had flown the coop........ some of there console tube stuff is garnering HUGE coin in the vintage market .......compared to companies like Magnavox, Electrohome is relatively unkown
 
I have just recently bought one. I have the same issue with 5he bulbs. Someone said that they only needed a cleaning. Really? Looks like a real job to take of the faceplate to do it. Help
 
Would anybody have a manual for this or that is similar to this unit? mine still works good but definitely need to be restored. looking for a SM so I can dial it in after I get it restored.
