ELGAR tube amp with a Scope

Dear members,
I have recently received a rare tube amp titled "ELGAR" with no other identification re: model, manufacturer or origin. I have received the amp without its tubes but was able to find that it should use the following:
4x12E1, 4Xecc82 1xE180CC and 2xGZ37 rectifier tubes. the Scope tube is #37 AFAIK.
Pics are from another sale on eBay (a similar amp with the tubes)

I built 3 of them for the uk ambassador to Paris for use in the embassy and still have the prototype. They were built to a circuit I partly designed for billington valves in the uk.
Your valve listing is correct and you could unplug the top caps and fit 12e14 or s11e12.

The scope was for amusement only and by feeding the left and right channels into the x and y plates you got a wonderful display. The prototype was designed to compare the performance of 12e1 s11e12 and 12e14 but the 12e1 ediswan in particular produced the best sound. The 3 amps were identical and I do not know how they entered the market. I have seen 2 on ebay and the one in this thread must be number 3. They were built around 1995 and painted in Rolls Royce Garnet cellulose enamel. So is it in the UK or USA?

Thanks for the reply, Gerry. I've seen the 12E1 proposed in ultralinear mode but haven't seen any long-term data on their reliability used that way. Not to ask for any design secrets, but do these amps run the screens at higher than the 300 volt max rating? Just curious. I use 807s in my amps and you can get away with 400 volts on the screen. The 12E1 would be interesting to try but not if they won't tolerate that sort of operation.

The amp was called the elgar all triode amplifier so the 12e1s were triode connected and run at around 330v on the plates.

Interesting, thanks for the reply! So, basically close to the max screen voltage. Lots of plate disspation to play with, though. ;-)

The valves in those positions in the picture are incorrect. They should be gz37 which don't have top caps of course. He copied those pics from an ebay item which showed a broken ecc82 as well.
I don't know what has happened to my lovely amps!

They are pretty. And who doesn't like power meters and scopes?
That's the first time I've seen a scope on an amplifier. I had a Marantz tuner with a scope that I gave to one of my sons. I like the color. I like the old colors Rolls, Porche and others used many years ago.
