Empire 698 with Soundsmith Boheme....wow!!

bolero

Super Member
finally got this mounted on my 698 headshell, and still need to do some proper setup, but from what I have heard so far...WOW!! what a great sounding piece of equipment. I am floored by how amazing the system sounds

the Soundsmith Boheme is a cartridge/stylus with a solid ebony body, a ruby cantilever & a nude contact line stylus, I went with the medium compliance model with some input from folks at AK

here's an info link:

I would like to thank everyone here who gave me advice, via PM or on the forum. I am a relative vinyl newbie but am learning more as time goes on.

the 698 headshell is normally bottom mount, so I had to improvise a bit. I cut small plastic pieces the exact size of the threaded brass nuts that were stock, and replaced them. the hole is larger so the screws go right thru.

it is working well, I just need to fabricate some sort of handle eventually. since the 698 is auto lift/drop it's not a big deal ATM

the cartiridge is beautiful to look at, the ebony really does look sharp on there. and it sounds killer!!

big thanks to Peter at Soundsmith for patiently fielding my questions

and a big thanks to David at Locke Street Audio in Hamilton, fantastic store & expertise :thmbsp:

cheers

ps I am still working on getting an original Empire cartridge/stylus combination, to compare & also will be interesting to hear how these TT sounded OEM

the other day the cap/resistor on the power switch fizzed out on me, I heard it as I turned the TT off. Thereafter every time I powered it off there was a *pop* thru the amp, regardless of whether the TT was set as the source

here is a shot of the circuit board underneath the platter

I replaced C1 & R15 based on the schematic ( R15 is hidden a bit by the switch ) and it works 100% fine again now. hopefully for another 40 years or so ;)

nice!

thx Grbluen....figured I'd document it here, in case someone else runs into the same issue
