Empires are often hard to identify for several reasons. First among them is the fact that they made a ton of private label versions for every type of customer from turntable manufacturers (Marantz) to department store chains (E.J. Korvette's) to record store chains. We can often determine what model a cartridge is a clone of by identifying the stylus installed in the cartridge. That's not a sure bet because there's no way of determining whether the stylus is the original one or the same as the original.
With that caveat let's proceed with identifying your 122 XE/N. The gold body doesn't really tell us anything. Empire offered these "Blob on a Clip" cartridges in gold, silver and black and Empire didn't always use the color of the original when making a clone thereof. So, the gold body isn't diagnostic. The purple stylus, however, is identifiable. It's an S912E, a 0.2 x 0.7 mil diasa* elliptical. The S912E was used on the 999VE/X [edit: 999QE/X] Wrong!!! [edit #2: it's a 66QE/X] cartridge and all of its numerous clones. It was the top of the line in the Empire Rex series. As such, it was a popular choice for wholesale customers looking for a private label cartridge.
So, that's probably what you have. If so, you have a very good cartridge, one of the best of the Blobs but the only way to tell for sure is to measure the DC resistance of the coils. It should measure around 550 ohms but that would have to wait until the turntable is in your possession. Hope this helps you to make the right decision.
