Empire Grenadier Speakers-anybody know about them?

There is an ad in the local newspaper this morning for a pair of Empire Grenadier speakers. It doesn't mention the model number. It states that they are 20" in diameter and 28" tall and have a round marble top. They're asking $100 for the pair. I haven't called yet, but does anyone know anything about these or has anyone ever heard them? I have no idea what kind of shape they're in or how old they are. I do remember seeing ads from the early seventies with naked women in the photos. I think they have a down firing woofer in them from what little info I've been able to find.

Be sure to have a good listening session before paying any money. I too remember those racy ads from the 1970's but I never read anything particularly positive about Empire speakers and they never developed any sort of widespread acclaim or following. None of the stereo stores I visited here in LA back in the '70's carried them, so I've never heard a pair in action.....

I'm a majority on one in liking them when they were new. Though they look like they could be driven by a DC300 they were designed for low power, low level listening. Think in the living room, low lights, fireplace lit, you in a smoker, brandy in hand toasting you loving wife - in her thread bare robe, mud pack and rollers in her hair. Hey I had to get reality in the scene.

If I found a set of 7000M or 9000M locally for that price and the drivers are working, I'd pop for them.

They didn't get outstanding reviews, but that doesn't mean they might not be very good in some systems -- the Empire turntables didn't get as much respect back then as they deserved either. But be aware that the downfiring woofers can sag. And make sure for that price you get the marble tops. If its of any significance, I think they frequently go for much more on Ebay, or did before everyone started pinching pennies.
