Empty K-Horn cabinet near Springfield, MO

A scary combination. I have one early K-horn with unobtanium drivers.

And here I could get matching drivers and another cabinet. It would give me a matching pair, but I would need to refinish both cabinets, and completely replace the older K-horn's guts. How much bad karma do you get from converting and refurbing one of the first 100 K-horns ever made? At the end it would be a 3-way, and while it would sound great, it would look nothing like it did originally.

Now that I look at it again...that's a nice collection of vintage EV stuff, but didn't the K-Horns use 15" woofers?

Early K-Horns used 12" speakers (the original design was 12", but within a few years there were excellent 15" woofers that quickly replaced the 12" speakers, even before the system went 3-way).

I'm not a fan of the K-horns but even I think there's no way you should do that. :nono:

My dilemma is wanting two speakers, and being unable to find another to pair with mine. Many of the earliest K-horns were different, with Klipsch trying different speaker brands and combinations.

If I did the mods (to match any other K-horn I might find), the speaker would look somewhat similar from the outside (likely a new wood color and certainly new grille cloth), but none of the acoustic components would be the same. The problem is that I can't easily find tru-sonic horn drivers, and can't even find another reference to the "unique" Jensen woofer that my K-horn contains.

Of course it's yours so do as you like but...
Seems to me that the ideal plan for you would be to sell your little piece of history to a collector and use the proceeds to buy a newer pair of K-horns.

I feel a custodial obligation to my rare items to not alter their originality. Usually collectors will reward this behavior.

Whats the story with the Jensen woofer?

My K-horn has a Jensen W15NB speaker, with a probable production code date from 1953. It is obviously not the original (the K-horn dates back to a few years earlier), but I can't find any reference to any Jensen "W" series driver. I have the original sales receipts on the K-horn, but nothing related to the woofer replacement / upgrade.

Sam, at that price, I'll jump if you can get it. I even have parts so you can set up a two way and listen to it for five or six months if you want. I sent you a PM.

Guys,

If you don't want to commit, you can always buy it for me. I'll try to arrange a Pony Express shipment, and you can always chenge your mind and decide to keep it until then.

We're going to play a guessing game. It's called "which is taller: K-Horn or Corvette?"

The guy tossed in a not-exactly-small EV Empire cabinet with the K-Horn.

Strangely enough for a corner-horn speaker, the EV doesn't fit very well into a 90* corner.

I'm probably keeping the EV - in fact, I've already hauled it into my office and plunked my Victor tube receiver on top of it. The K-Horn is almost certainly only temporarily in my custody - which is a good thing for my garage. Except for a few small veneer chips and a couple of scuffs on the bottom of the horn box, it's in beautiful shape. The very 50s mid-century grille cloth is, at first brief examination, nearly perfect.

Photo time! The bit of staining at the bottom of the K-Horn has been accentuated by the flash. I didn't notice it last night when looking at it with a flashlight, it's visible but not terribly distracting in sunlight.
