Energy vs JBL!!

Newbie in New B.
I have a pristine set of Energy pro 22s with stands, say 9.5/10 condition and have been considering trading for a pair of JBL L80Ts in pretty good condition. Say 8/10
The main reason I want the JBLs is I also have a set of L100Ts and they match well.
I'm having a hard time deciding especially since they sound so different.
PlEase don't make other recommendations as these are the only 2 I mentioned

I was actually thinking surround sound, but that would most definitely be overkill
 
Having heard both but not back to back in the same system I would venture the Energy would win for 3D presentation and pinpoint imaging, the L80T for punch and LF power. Agree with Darkblue94 about the advantage of having two different top quality pieces.

The thing is, I have several sets of top quality pieces.. besides these, I have Vandersteen 2Cis, rebuilt Dahlquist DQ-10s,( PSB Stratus silvers, minis ,and C-6 center) Nuance 5 speaker surround also, Infinity RS5Bs... VL modded Optimus 5Bs, Spendor SP2s

I am currently running the PSB set with a magnificent Yamaha RX-A3060 receiver, the L100Ts with a big Pioneer SX-1280, the L80t's (on trial) with Pioneer SX-980, Spendor SP2s with JVC AX-Z1010 and matching stack.
Also not currently being used, Yamaha MX/CX 1000u amp preamp, Fisher X-101-B, Marantz 2250, Luxman LV105U, Sansui AU750, and a few others,,
I AM REALLY SICK!! :crazy::crazy::crazy::rflmao:

Nice collection! What shape is your Fisher in? I have the X-101-C and X-202-B. I used to have the LV-105 back when I was selling Luxman.
 
Personally, I would keep the Energy speakers. They are great speakers that fly under the radar.

I would also say that using them as surround speakers would be overkill in most systems.

There have been a couple suggestions that the JBLs have better LF, I beg to differ, the 22s seem to have better low end, tested in a garage, and my living room, garage is 20x26 LR is 12x15.
That is hearing, not actual numbers
 
^^^ sorry to hear about your hearing vintageo. The woofer is bigger and better in the l80t not to mention the cabinet size is much bigger as well. The tweeter is where all the magic is at on those energys

I wasn't the only one to hear it, for some reason the 22s were better, mind you it was at lower volumes, never past about 10 o'clock on a Yamaha rx-v 995 not the best amp, but no slouch either, maybe placement is an issue too.
 
I also read that the bass from the 22s is very surprising even though all the development $$$ went into the million dollar tweets

Try -3 db at 28 hz for the 22's. They might not thump and boom in the midbass as hard but they go quite low.
 
I hear you - I've been questioning my own sanity on a different forum.

Don't ditch the 22's. They are somewhat historic. Either the National Research Council in Ottawa was conceived for it's development or the 22 was the first product developed using that facility. The CBC adopted them coast to coast for use in their studios - or so I was told. Their tweeters were a big deal and when 22's came out, it was referred to as "the million dollar tweeter". Plus I think Winslow Burhoe had a finger in it's development.

Agreed that the JBL's mentioned are a party speaker but that's about it. Besides, you've got another pair from the same series, why would you want two?

Good points, I broke the news to him, I'm keeping the 22s for now.

When I bought my Energy Reference Connoisseur RC-30 towers in 2009 for HT use I called Energy and asked the fellow on the phone what it would take to best my Energy Pro-22 Monitors. He told me even their Reference Connoisseur line of 2009 would not be up to the task. Only their very expensive Veritas line would compare, and even then it would be very close.

The average cabinet finish and low price of the Pro-22's is very deceiving. The Original Pro-22 Reference Connoisseur with a cabinet more befitting of the speakers capabilities makes it IMO one of the finest speakers period, Once it has its tweeters ferro fluid flushed and refilled, and the caps in its X-Over replaced.

To fully appreciate the 22's it requires a very good amp and source. When connected to my decent sounding Onkyo AVR the 22's sounded not much better than my RC-30 Towers, Both sounded good. But when I used my Bryston Amp with the optional DAC module, the 22's were much more transparent, even with the original tweeters and X-over caps. The bass was so clean you can almost feel the tension on drum skins, and hear each disc on the tambourine as if it is played in the room. Quite possibly Energy's best effort.

Wow I think you like them! I do too! I haven't tried them on my Yamaha RX-A3060 yet, this thing makes everything sound so sweet! Yes an avr, but no ordinary one, check out reviews is all I can say. I can't wait to try them on this unit!
