Entering into Mcintosh Land - C2200, MCD201 and MC252 Good?

Hi,

I am looking for a new 2 channel setup, after testing Musical Fidelity and Classe and decided to look at Mcintosh.

Does this configuration match or suit:

C2200 pre or C46 pre
MCD201 CD
MC252 amp

For a pair of B&W 803D speakers?

I believe the C2200 would provide better sonics than the C46?

Good move :D.

I have 2 of the 3 components you mention (MCD201 (discontinued - so I'm assuming you'll be buying used) and MC252 still in production) and I think you'd be very happy with them and the C2200.

If you are planning to buy new, please note that the MCD201 has been replaced by the MCD301 and the C2200 by the C2300.

In case you haven't seen it, I did a video review of the MC252 (+ C220) combo ... it will give you an idea of what to expect sonically from McIntosh.

Put photographs on a wall of three different McIntosh preamps, three different McIntosh power amps, and three different McIntosh CD players, blindfold yourself and throw darts at the photos. No matter which preamp, power amp and CD player your darts land on, you will have a great system.

But not to worry.......you'll own the other two from each catagory and more before it's over. McIntosh is music.

Ahaha nice one.

Well the configuration was:

1.
C2200 -used
MCD201 -used
MC252 - new

VS

2.
C46 -new
MCD301 -new
MC242 -new

40% saving on option 1 vs 2

Dan's nailed it. And watch Alberto's review, fantastic.
I used to have both the 201 and 252, and a 2200 in the mix for a bit...

Not to worry buying used, especially from AC, DeWick, etc.
McIntosh gear is usually owned by aficionados who care for it well.
If you're trying to save a bit of $$ and don't need a tuner, consider using the MCD201 variable outputs and skip the preamp for now (and step up to the MC402 amp...)
As Dan says, you'll get a lot of different models eventually -- good resale values allow you to trade up relatively painlessly.

How about used ms300, instead of mcd201, play with with the digital crowd. I agree the only mistake that matters is the first one.

I have the three listed in new Mid Atlantic racks in my exercise room. I am using my old ADI L 710 speakers and the sound is simply superb. Go for it! :thmbsp:

mvpjack,

Yes. Both MCD's have variable level outputs that can be routed directly to the amp via XLR or RCA cable ends. In my simple system the MCD-201 sounded excellent using that setup going straight to my integrated's amp section. Very musical.

Best of luck!
