E-PL1 and Sigma 600mm Catadioptric Lens

Now that I have a Minolta adapter for my E-PL1 I thought I would try out the 600mm cat lens on some moon shots. There is a half-moon out tonight and so I mounted up the E-PL1 with a lens that easily dwarfs the camera body and tried to zero in on the moon. Not an easy task on a new tripod head that still needs a lot of break in to get nice and loose. I also took some comparison shots of the moon with my D700 and the 24-70 maxed out at 70mm. :scratch2: See for yourselves. Take a guess as to which is which. :D Not bad considering that tonight's moon is high up above the horizon and still rather small in view.

Both images are uncropped.

Looks really good, zoom in like that,the moon moves by quickly, I imagine you had to work pretty fast to get that shot.

You are correct. I had to constantly make adjustments to my pan head to compensate for the movement. I didn't realize it would move almost out of my frame within a couple shots. At first, I thought I bumped the tripod out of position. :D
 
I have a 500mm, f8 mirror lens and have never been really thrilled with the images it gets with any of my DSLRs. I can see from the pics you posted here, that there is banding and artifacts showing up. My guess that it's just the nature of the beast, but YMMV.
 
That's interesting because I don't see what you are seeing. The image with the 600 lens was posted from my 27" iMac which is set to its highest native resolution. I know I'm getting old but my peepers still function pretty well even after all these years of staring at contact sheets.

If you are referring to the bottom pic taken with my D700 those are clouds and the banding is the variation in the lighting as the sun had not yet retired for the night. In the pic above it I see no artifacts of any kind on either my iMac screen or my iPad. Maybe I shouldn't be using Apple products as this may be why I don't see it? :D
 
I don't know why they are showing up on my monitor that way? All other images on AK show up normally, but all the ones Jesse posted using the mirror lens are like that on my laptop. :scratch2:
 
Must be your laptop. :D I have yet to see a laptop with a screen that does justice to photographs in all situations. There is just something that doesn't look right but maybe its just me. However, the Apple laptops look awesome, especially the new models with the retina display. If I was on the go a lot I would definitely consider one of the new Mac's but I really can't justify the expense right now and I really like the huge real estate my 27" iMac gives me when I work on my images.

Those shots with your mirror lens are the only ones of thousands of photos I have viewed on my laptop that have looked like that.
My laptop is an HP Pavilion dv6 with 4 gigs of ram, windows 7, 64 bit, AMD Turion dual-core processor with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 video processor.
This really has me puzzled as to why those images are displaying like that. :scratch2:

That is puzzling. Do you see the same thing if you click on the thumbnails?
