EPI 100s to refoam

I've done several pairs of EPI 100's, and my personal favourite cap for the crossover is the PE 1% with a PE film & foil bypass cap. YMMV
 
Well, I received the surrounds yesterday, and the caps are in today from Parts Express (yes, I clicked on the link here so Audiokarma got credit) but I noticed several mentioned using a D battery to center when refoaming. How exactly is this done?
 
Get a D-cell battery holder from your local Radio Shack. Install D-Cell.

Clip the leads from the holder to the speaker terminals. It will either push the cone out, or pull it in (depending upon polarity). It will center the voice coil, and hold it in position while your glue sets up.
 
I use an amp and just play some music at low volume. That way if there is an issue, I hear it while I'm working and correct it. Not sure if that's the "right" way to do it, but it's worked for me many times.
 
I like amp better than 1.5 VDC constant offset. But, it's all easy with EPI's. Do the surrounds with Aileens wet and as you rub around the edge to keep working it into the glue while setting, just push the cone down and let it relax. If it's off center, you'll know right away and can move it over to one side or another by a scoche.

For most speakers I do, unless they are known to have tight VC clearances, I just work the Aileens wet and push the cone lightly once in each of the four cardinal directions. If no rub, I assume the spider is holding center and just keep working the rim down until the glue sets. If I get a bit-o-rub, I move it all over and clamp the edge to hold it while I work the rest of the rim down while the glue sets. have not had a problem using this method in like 6~7 pairs and I don't need to cut the dust cap :)
 
I always use guidetones in the 20 hz range to center my epis while refoaming...it is super easy to get the perfect amount of movement to check alignment.
 
Well, I successfully reconed one of the woofers with minimal problem. I did not even use the D cell method to center it. I just did it by hand and it lined up nicely. I replaced the old capacitor with a better one from Parts Express, reinstalled the woofer and she is singing pretty again! They sound as good as my old Genesis II did. I am quite impressed, and these are definitely keepers! :music:
 
Congratulations Malanga it now not only sounds good but it feels good to of done it your self doesn't it?! I've done quite a few surrounds in the past few weeks but haven't tried doing one without removing the dust-caps yet as in "-too chicken-"! .
