Epi 20+ -- how do they compare against BA400 or Polk RTA12?

Mystery

constantly upgrading...
Any experience with Epicure 20+?
Obviously, they need re-foam but will they be an upgrade from BA 400 or Polk RTA-12?
I like my 100v so I guess these should be even better. :scratch2:
Looks like they are pretty hefty at 64 lbs each.

Dimensions: 29" x 18 1/2" x 11"
Weight: 64 lbs

Thanks for comments.

I've never seen them before but they might be a 1980's redux of the 1970's M201.
I like the M201 but I guess you'd have to hear the 20+s to know if they can outdo the A400, and as for the RTA12...:)

Got them but could not test as we met in a parking lot.
They are in decent shape besides few scratches/dings and some MDF break issue on the bottom stand panels.
Grill covers are missing EPI logo.

However, shocked to see duct tape surrounds on them. :yikes::screwy::bash:
He said he used them like that for a while and took them out of one speaker to take pictures for listing. Let's hope VC is okay.

I thought I never would see that.
I saw an AK'er with duct taped avatar here somewhere.
He can use this from now on. :D

So should I just peel the duct tape or use some chemicals to make it easier?
BTW, the sticker says 20 - not +. :scratch2:
Top is slanted towards the front.

OMG!
I have never seen anything so stupid done to a speaker as that tape job over those poor woofers!!

Anyway, I just purchased a pair of Epicure 20+ speakers about a month ago and just finished removing the old/installing the new surrounds on all the woofers. I have not listened to them yet...I am still letting the glue fully cure.

I will post a little write-up with pictures on these forums soon.

Wow... already 2 years...

Finally, these got some attention after almost 2 years. :yikes:

Duct tape came off without using anything.

Be careful though, when you pull the tape, put pressure on the cone otherwise it'll deform the cone.
Just put pressure where you are pulling and peel it off slowly by moving the pressure accordingly.

Gravity has its affect on the drivers.
The drivers on top that sit almost horizontal have spiders little bit sagging while the spiders of the lower vertical drivers still come out and hold the cone much higher.

As you can see, PO used a lot of duct tape, multiple layers of it.

Back of drivers: Some have Sept 26 1977 date while others have Oct:

I'll update capacitor and epoxy magnets after listening to them little bit.

I'm glad the tape came off easily and didn't mess up those sweet blue woofer cones.

Yes, if they were anything harder, I'd have used some heat but it worked great as is.

Man those tweeters are quite amazing.
Male voices have that natural roughness most other tweeters struggle to produce.
Next is to upgrade capacitor and epoxy magnets sometimes in the future...
Also need to fix few screw holes as they have disintegrated.

Here is finished product: Need to wipe down duct tape marks... ;)

Looking at the picture I noticed few things:

15419849930_bf064e500f_o.jpg

If you check the drivers' back, the two on the right have rough back while the two on the left have smooth.

The right drivers also have ring indentation 1/2" in the cone while left drivers are completely smooth.
They both are from the same speaker.
Looks like slight difference depending upon the date as some have sept and some have oct date on them.

Looks like the ones from Sept have rough back.
May be different batch.
Hmm...

All have 8 on the sides and date stamped on the back.
I need to check other pictures later.

Also noticed that some driver baskets have holes in the inner metal frame while others don't.
Right front and left back drivers' frames have holes.
Not sure what's the point of having a hole there. May be to hold terminals?
The part of the frame where the hole is, is wider than the ones with no hole.
Weird... what say you?

From what I've read about EPI/Epicure/Genesis--and what I've experienced with the few pairs of their speakers I've had--they tended to use whatever they had on hand, and sometimes there were cosmetic differences in drivers due to which batch they came from.

Weird... what say you?

With as many speakers as were being built back then, a shipment of baskets would arrive and off they go into production. Next set of baskets might be a bit different. Kept happening, everywhere. Few manufacturers made stuff the same all the time. Epicure might not have cared about the supplier of the basket.

Looks like that's the case.

Bass was really bad/less on these and turns out, I connected one woofer out of phase.
Once that's corrected, they sounded really nice and balanced.
Not as much bass as JBL's but not lacking either.

Next, I replaced the capacitor.
However, the crossover/terminal cup is a ****.
Terminal cup can only come from the back but the binding posts protruding inside prevent it from coming out.
So instead, I soldered and hot glued within the cabinet.
I was thinking of replacing resistors as I have them as well but need to take terminal cup out and need to disassemble the terminal posts so not this time.

Hot glue gave me a middle finger.
When I took the glue gun out of the woofer hole, a big drop landed on my middle finger and now I have a big blister right below the nail.
Swapped the woofers from top to low and put some wood glue on the bottom stands as the small MDF base is pretty weak in few areas.

Original crossover:
Original capacitor also is poly so might have been okay but not as good as new since it's 37 years old now.

New capacitor along with old capacitor on the side:

They sound really good so far.
Nice highs and mids and slightly less bass than I like but after listening a while, it doesn't come into mind. :thmbsp:

If you decide you would like to sell them, let me know. I have had many sets of these over the years and I love them. As a matter of fact, I restored a set (they are on ebay right now) and sold them to a guy in Arizona, and I have a really nice set in my stereo room. I bought/brought a set back with me from Germany when I was in the service and my buddy talked me out of them when I decided to go back in and finish my 20 years. I keep a set of tweeters on hand because they are the first to go. If you notice a moist spot around the inverted tweeter voice coil, it's because they are starting to leak the ferro fluid. Thanks

Perry

I've had quite a few speakers so need to pass them but these are very nice sounding speakers.

With the exception of most anything from the Time/Energy series and later, I've yet to meet/hear an EPI speaker I didn't like.

EPI 20+ almost saved my life! I had a bookshelf with hundreds of Cd's and other stuff mounted on a wall near in my bedroom also a TV set on a dresser. I sat down on my bed one day and all of a sudden the book case came loose from the wall crashing down, luckily I had a pair of EPI 20+ underneath and the bookshelf landed on them. The speakers weren't damaged barely a few scratches.
