Epi 301 crossover.

Hi all, I have a pair of EPI A300’s and m100’s. I love the 100’s, but the 300’s are way too middy and bright. I have to really tweak the eq to listen to them. Has anyone re-vamped the crossover or had this issue? I have re-capped them with the same values. Hoping to get them to have the same spatial qualities and soundstage as the m 100’s.

Unless you had some bad caps, replacing them probably won't change what you're hearing. If you're lacking bass in comparison to the mids and highs, maybe the woofers are out of spec. Are they originals? And looking at the crossovers, did you replace the original inductors? Are the new inductors the same RESISTANCE as well as inductance as the originals? If the resistance is higher, that would reduce the level of bass relative to the mids and tweeters.

Another question is, what the hell is that big orange block with some sort of bypass? Is that the 10ufd tweeter cap? That might be part of the problem.

There's something magic about the original 2-way EPIs. Single capacitor crossover and drivers that roll off naturally. You'll never get that sound from a 3-way speaker with a complex crossover. The response may be as flat or flatter in terms of level, but phase is all over the place.

The woofers are from Human. I did not change the inductors. The orange cap is 10ufd from Russia. Cold War from a tank I believe. My neighbor loves them lol.
 
That crossover has no resistors. Seems odd not to have at least one resister. Resistors are used to level match the different drivers. What are those small black devices paralleled on all the caps? Bypass caps? Do you have a schematic?
 
I think the M100 and the A300 are entirely different speakers, alike in name only...WInslow Burhoe, the founder of EPI and Epicure, was long gone by the time the A300 came along in the 80's...the basis of most of Burhoes speakers was an inverted dome tweeter and an 8 inch woofer which he used in various cabinet sizes with the woofer rolling off naturally...if the m100 you have is from Burhoes original concept, getting these speakers to sound the same might be a long shot.
