EPI (Epicure) M50's

Hey everyone--

Anyone out there who can give me a quick review of EPI (Epicure) M50 speakers? I've found a few references via search, but am generally unfamiliar with this brand and model, and wondering if they might be a good match for my listening space.

The EPI M50's have walnut real wood veneer and use the original masonite tweeter. I think the EPI 50's sound superior to the 100's. To my ear they sound a little smoother, silkier. The tweeter and 6" woofer seem very well balanced.

I just bought a 2nd pair in fabulous condition last week for $50. If you can find a pair for that price range ( or even double ), I would go it.

Match them up with a Marantz receiver....I am running a pair at work. I thought might as well enjoy some good speakers if I have to be at work everyday. No one has stolen them...yet...lol
 
I have an early pair of M50s that I purchased when new. They are in the living room, connected to a Marantz 2252B, and a Sony cdp. That is my wife's primary listening system. It gets used every day, and still sounds great. Caps and resistors got replaced, binding posts on the back, and new surrounds installed.

Even if I wanted to try something else in that system, and I don't, my wife says she doesn't want anything changed in her system.

Sounds like a can't-miss pair. Gonna take the plunge on these, even though one is missing its grille, and I'm already overrun with speakers. Hmm, maybe a pairing with my Marantz 2220B . . .

After you freshen them up, (Dayton poly caps, 1% 10 uf, and new 5 ohm resistors) it will be a match made in heaven.
 
i got them and love them even tho they are damaged . i built new cabs for
them (bigger) even tho the org. cabs are in decent shape.

i have one woofer which makes noise on loud bassy passages. i suspect that
the VC wires are distorted from too much heat. i certainly cannot see any
separation of the driver to spider or spider to frame. Play yours loudly with some bass
for some time before you buy to make sure yours are not as bad as mine.
if you need org. cabs let me know.

i used sonicaps and mills resistors to refresh.

Then again, I used a KA-3500 and my M50s and a Dual 1219 to supply music to the all-night party that was held next door, back in about 1980.

All night, all the neighbours were invited, and showed up. Pointed the speakers out two windows, and let 'em rip. Amp at about 2 o'clock on the volume knob, and it was difficult to carry on a conversation outside.

Don't underestimate these speakers. The amp will probably quit before they do.
 
I'm refurbishing a pair myself and even though they had a pair of basic replacement woofers installed when I acquired them, they still sounded pretty frickin sweet. (I was able to source a pair of the original woofers recently as well).

If my pre-refurbished pair is any indication of what's to come. The M50's will certainly be long time keepers for me.
 
Yeah, not sure what kind of refurbishment might be needed. Apparently they were refoamed recently. Going on faith here, but all the recommendations have me pretty excited about this.

And I do have a smallish listening space, so it seems like a good match.

Ok, turns out these EPIs are "studio monitors." Can anyone tell me if there's a distinction on the EPI M50s between regular speakers and studio monitors?

The M50's with original driver is a very good speaker. They have the best sounding version of the inverted dome. You do have to be careful not to hit them with a high watt amp as those tweeters (thankfully) no ferro-fluid and won't take a pounding. They do however have a sweet sound especially when paired with something like a nice vintage 70's receiver. I have couple pairs of highly thought of and relatively expensive modern bookshelf speakers which are very good in their own right but no where as sweet sounding for long casual listening sessions. Yes the HF rolls off earlier than modern ones but that's ok by me. If I need more upper range I could just sit a super tweeter on top or add a sub for more low range extension.
