EPI tweeter problem

EPI Model 70c speakers with tweeter problem

I found a pair of EPI Model 70c speakers for sale. The foams need to be replaced (the kleenex that is stuffed in there doesn't seem to be working) which I don't mind doing. The issue I have is with one of the tweeters. One appears to be falling off or out at the back. Is this simple enough to glue back into place, or is there not much hope for it anymore? I know that the leads on the tweeter are also broken, but I think they can be soldered back on (not something I have done before).

Are these worth picking up?

Unfortunately, many EPI speakers are known for the magnets falling off of the tweeters, and that's what it looks like has happened here. It may or may not be fixable; if not, replacements are available.

Whether they're worth picking up or not would depend on the price. Less than $40? Hellyeah.

Happy trails,
Larry B.

Epi speakers, and the balance between tweeter and woofer, is legendarily great.

Pick em up, get the replacements from the Human website (I think that is the name. Human. How odd.)

Thanks for the reply Larry. They are much less than $40, but I can't afford to put too much into them right now. Like I mentioned, I don't mind taking care of the refoam, but I haven't had to try and repair something like this tweeter...that's kind of scaring me away.

If the dome assembly hasn't come loose from the magnet (it's still bonded to the front of the magnet), and you can fix the lead wires OK, you should be able to just epoxy the magnet back onto the plastic faceplate.

If the dome assembly is loose from the magnet, you will have to align it in the magnet gap, so that it doesn't rub anywhere around the voice coil, and glue it to the magnet, then glue the whole assembly to the faceplate. That's a little more dicey.

Regards,
Gordon.

Thanks for the replies. It seems you all think that these would be worth grabbing. I might even get them pretty cheap due to the condition they are in. Perhaps I'll stop by soon and see what they can do.

"Much less than $40" they're no brainers. Get 'em, refoam the woofers, and then tackle the tweeters. I paid $20 for my 100Ws years ago and I'm still enjoying them (and would never sell them).

If you can't fix the tweets, hang onto them until you can buy replacements. And yes, humanspeakers.com is the place to go.

I just have lots of things kicking around not being used...same problem I always seem to have. :thmbsp:

Just finished a refoam of some Mirage 200 speakers that might need to go then...

Decided to go and get these speakers. Looking into new surrounds from Rick Cobb. All foams I have gotten from him have been good. He has two foams the correct size, but one is a standard angle attach and the other is filleted. Any ideas what type of surround is original? There is literally no surround left for me to tell.

Also, should I keep updating this thread or start another regarding these speakers? The title is a little specific to my original question...

I think you can edit the title, but starting another thread seems unnecessary to me. Many threads morph, just roll with it.

Congrats on your score, Epi tweeters are sooooo sublime.

Humanspeakers are experrs on EPI and Genesis speakers. They can answer questions and probably supply foams as well as tweeters.

Enjoy.
