Hey gang, I am looking for a replacement for the EPI 6" woofer that is used in the EPI 50-70. I checked the Human Speakers website and I just can see paying 48 bucks for those woofers. I don't even see the specs, so I can't really tell what they are. I am looking for a cheaper option with similar specs for a DIY pair of EPI 60's (I have the EPI Tweeters already).

It took me a few weeks to find a set and it was another A'ker that sorted me out with a pair. Someone had a set posted on Ebay a week or so ago and they wanted nearly as much as HUMAN. - I'd say just keep looking. I'm wrapping up a refurb job on the M-50's I acquired. - I'll post some photos of the Before and After when I'm done.

Bostown...I just picked up my 2nd pair of M-50's and my 2nd pair of M-85's...I also have a pair of M-65's....I have a pair of Optimus woofers to swap into the 50's...paid $3-7 a pair....One was missing a tweeter...but a friend had one...swapped a cheap $10 pair of Yamaha book shelf speakers for the tweet!

Dualhead....check out Parts Express.com...or look around the local thrift stores for a good woofer swap! I have found many good woofer swaps for smaller speakers... Some Aiwa are good sleeper woofers...cast frames, etc...don't remember which model...but have a good look!!

The EPI woofer is unique in that it is designed to run fully open and crossover well with the tweeter. You may be able to find something aftermarket or from another manufacturer that suits, but the chances are slim, the best bet is to find an original replacement. Good luck, patience will win out.

i always use jaycar woofers to replace my audio gear, they are cheap and work great

Speakers are engineered to operate as a unit. This is why there are books and journals and websites and an assembled body of knowledge about how drivers act (and) interact, what various types of crossovers do to frequency response, phase, dispersion; cabinet design (and their effect on all the same parameters). If you assume a wise and thoughtful designer/engineer (or team) did a good job with their design work, and that the final assembly of his chosen parts and design was adequate or better, what would make you decide that you wanted to change it (by driver/component/housing substitution)?

in a 15L box, they come up with a -3db of 56 hz, -6db ~ 49hz, -10db ~40hz, with a 2.5db peak at 98hz...
for $9 ea, it's worth a shot...worse case, maybe you have to play with adding a low pass via a coil in series and possibly cap in parallel to try mimic the EPI's HF roll off

Thanks all for the replies. In fact I had explored the idea of grabing a pair of full range drivers and running the EPI with them for the high stuff with just the 10 uf cap just like in the EPI's and running the full rangers wide open. Box geometry would have to change though.

If you want your speaker to sound good, your best bet is with HUMAN SPEAKERS....He makes them by hand, (not made in China) They sound better than origianls...I have done business with "Huw" for many years, and his replacement speakers, are "Top of Line" They are new, not used, and so, I suggest you go with Human Speakers...Simply the "BEST"
Made in the USA by hand, huh? That is pretty cool. Definitely a consideration.

Exactly true. As FreeOrange said, the EPI module design runs the woofers fully open, without a low-pass section in the crossover to roll them off. A replacement woofer that's less extended or less well-behaved at the top of its range will not blend properly with the tweeter. The result will be a colored midrange.
Huw Powell will sell you the 6" woofers without an exchange, but the price goes up by $10 each because he won't be able to refund the "core charge" that he adds to ensure a supply of rebuildable drivers. The final price of $58 per woofer plus shipping isn't cheap, but many EPI fans would consider these speakers worth the cost of that repair.

I know I'm going to have to replace it, I brought it into a shop where they said they can replace the woofer (actually they recommend replacing both of the woofers to have balance) with a generic woofer with very similar specs. I was curious, will the speaker sound noticeably different with this new woofer in it versus the original?

It all depends. It might be very similar, it might be different. It might be very good, it might be much worse. But having both woofers professionally replaced is going to cost you, and it will no longer be really a pair of EPIs -- the value (which to be honest, isn't enormous), at least to collectors, will be diminished.
I suspect the magnet has shifted on the frozen one. You can fix it if you are handy -- there are threads on how to do it here, and you'd save money and keep the speakers original.
Of course, not everyone is suited to do it yourself stuff.
