Epicure?EPI upgrades?

Hey folks I've several set of Epicure EPI's laying about.

Epicure 14's and 20+

EPi
100's
201's
602's
202's

I'm thinking of moving them back into the rotation and I was wondering somethings?

1. Replace those awful spring binding post or leave un moded?
2. Are there any crossover mods that make sense?
3. Modify or leave as is for future sale?

Any help would be appreciated.

Change the posts (if the old ones bother you), change the caps in the XOs, and replace the wiring inside the speakers.
 
I'd replace the binding posts and add a fresh poly cap to the crossover, but that's about it. Those are well built as they are and a fresh cap just gets them back to spec.

Enjoy; EPIs are great stuff.

"caps"? What exactly are they in the crossovers and where do I get superior replacements?

1) Replace binding posts. It's akin to putting radial tires on a 60's musclecar. It only makes them better.

2)Unless a straight value for value recap, I'd not mess with the crossover. Though a new cap probably is a good idea.

3) Only other mods would be wood veneering any that are vinyl. Otherwise, you hurt value for resale if you start to mod them.

Nope they're all real wood. Thanks for reminding me I ought to oil them, it's been a while.

You can check out the Human Speakers website, the guy who runs Human, used to work for EPI or Genesis, but I forget what his history with them is excatly.

He recommends lots of bracing for the old EPI cabinets. But that's probably more than you want to get involved in.
But it's worth reading his opinions on how to upgrade/modernize EPI speakers, even if you decide not to go that route.
 
Most of those crossovers are basically single caps, either 10uf or 8uf and an easy swap. Just cut out the old and solder in a new one. Dayton or Jantzens from Parts Express are good and inexpensive.

Cap is short for capacitor. You can get new ones from Parts Express. I think I used Solen in my Genesis 2+ and it made a huge difference. As I recall, they only had a cap and a resistor- that's the whole crossover. Yours are probably similar. I replaced the resistor with something I ordered from Parts Express as well. Can't recall what it was exactly, but it doesn't cost but a few bucks to get the parts. I put five way binding posts in as well.

Bro you have been holding out on me I had no idea you had that many pairs of EPI's!

It looks like you have already got some good advice. i stay away from any mods unless one of those pairs is in such bad shape that their resale value has already been compromised.

Ah told you I was a "New England Sound" Fiend. I should add that the 100's and the 14's have already been "modded". The 14's are the best large bookshelf I've ever heard, and I've heard lots.
