Epicure vs. EPI

Couple of interesting differences between my Epicure 10 and my EPI 100 speakers. You can see that the Epicure was a little more "up-market" for a reason.

Notice the counter-sunk tweeter (tweeter body is flush with front baffle), and the ever slightly more sophisticated XO.

I found it interesting, but I'm pretty easily entertained nowadays.

I found a pair of Epicure 5's in the winter and refoamed them.
They sound really sweet with a little sansui (too lazy to run upstairs to check the model).
I was commenting how they sound really good, excellent actually, with really good bass.
Maybe I should check out the innard's again and see what is in them for crossovers/capps, didn't really look when I refoamed.
Is this a good way to upgrade epi's, the crossover I mean.

It's a good thing, to replace the EPI caps with poly or mylar caps, of the same value. The Dayton poly caps from Parts Express seem to work very well...

I wouldn't change anything else, unless it's not working. The EPI L-pads seem to clean up pretty easily; I haven't had to replace any of them...

That blue woofer cone looks like a Mirage driver, not a EPI. Is it original? (I know they are physically interchangeable since I've gone the other way, but wonder acoustically.)

Many of the EPI 6.5" drivers have blue cones. It's definitely original. The Mirage drivers have a different dustcap (larger) than the EPIs...

The pair on HumanSpeakers.com is a later incarnation of the 5, as demonstrated by the tweeter faceplate. Round masonite is an early version, plastic with logo is later.

Sometime around the 12 of august, i'll be getting my EPI 400s to go with the Epicure 400s when i arrange to get them from Johncan. I'll try to post similar pics of any apparent differences.

"plastic with logo is later". Hmm no plastic here all metal. And mine have January, 1977 stamped on the inside. I thought that was the first year they were made? At least that is what the Human site stated. Does anyone have a pair of the woofers mine are not original.

The higher-end EPICURE line used metal (aluminum?) bodied tweeters instead of the EPI plastic ones (starting in the late '70s).

Earlier EPI and EPICURE tweeters were all Masonite.
