Erratic lift-off with TD115

Tone arm lift-off is erratic with my Thorens TD115. It appears that it might be related to antiskate so I have been playing around with it. My Thorens handbook suggests AS at 3.5+ for a tracking weight of 1.5g. Some LPs do not even get to complete at this setting. Recently I have lowered AS to 1.5. Still getting mixed results. All LPs finish playing but some do not lift off, just stay stuck in the "wind-off" tracks, going round and round. Some lift off just fine. Of the ones that do not lift off, some do when AS is reduced further.
Is it common to have to fine tune AS for specific records?? Any other suggestions regarding erratic lift-off??

Any ideas would be appreciated. Is it common to have variation between (good condition) LPs that would cause this variation, or am I on the wrong track completely???
