ESS AMT-1c $$$$

I need to call a local person that is selling a pair of ESS AMT-1c speakers. He is the original owner and purchased new in 1981. The passives have both been replaced, all drivers and crossovers in spec. Those crappy grills are in the same shape mine were when I chucked mine. Anyhow he had them listed on e-bay for $525 (shipping $151 to my zip) but they didn't sell. I want to call and make an offer and go pick them up (he is like 20 miles away). How much should I offer? What do they bluebook for?:scratch2: :scratch2: :scratch2: :scratch2:

Sorry, I'm no help but I wanted to relate that I missed by minutes a pair of those ESS AMT 1Cs someone sold for $50 on the ATL CL last Saturday.

There's a guy at the local antique mall who's had a pair of these for literally years. They're tagged, "Great 70's speakers, need work. $700." "Work," in this case, would start at the foam being replaced and God knows what else. I've entertained ideas of throwing him an offer, but I've got too many projects and too little income.

Well, he can probably get close to $350-$400 for the drivers alone, so I wouldn't offer much less that that. Those Heil AMT tweeters will get him $200 easy and be a whole lot easier to ship than the entire unit.

I'd suggest $300 to $400.. I think Andyman is right on. (that's what happens when you get in the middle of Kegger and Grumpy for a while)

Like Andyman said, the AMTs alone will fetch at least $400 for the pair (and a bit more if you rip out the crossovers and toss those in too.) If you offer to ship to Germany or Europe, even more, where new AMTs go for over $800 each.

If the grille cloth is shot, that's one thing, but if the frames are busted up, then I wouldn't go much higher than $400. Go over and lay out 3 Grants and a Franklin or better yet, 7 Franklins (looks like more), and see what he says... :D

Yeah, the parts fetch more than 4 c-notes easy. Condition is King! Having sold 2 pairs of virtually mint AMT1D's for over $1K and the bigger Monitors for $1.5K recently, I had to put in a huge amount of work to get them that way and pack them correctly to get there that way too. It all adds up man. I agree with the $400.00 dollar range for beaters with potential. Good luck, and let me know if you need any restoration advice, I'd be glad to help.

See a couple of my ground-up restorations of these wonderful speakers:

I made an offer for $350 cash. I think that is fair.
For a seller who listed them for $525, you are lucky if you can get them for $400. What you think is fair may not be fair to him imho.

Sold, I got them for $400.
Great! Now ditch the grilles, hook'em up and enjoy, eh? :thmbsp:

You know, I actually like that JBL camel cloth that Gonzomeep used on his. Where did you procure said cloth, sir?

Mesa is very close to Ahwatukee. I like the pics with the tan cloth grills. They would show less dust.
Yeah, sure enough. That color is much better in real life too. PM me for info on it and how to do it. This job is not for the faint of heart. I've recovered a lot of various grilles in my time, even the PITA JBL "3D" type, but these ESS grilles take the cake!.

BTW, Im going to get the fellow that bought my AMT1D's to join us here at AK. Jake lives in Mesa, and is definately AK material, great guy! Maybe if we get enough ESS guys together, a dedicated ESS catagory could be added?

There is an old Mom & Pop supplier here in Bakersfield, CA that carries it. It is very thin and acoustically transparent (as much as any cloth can be "tansparent":scratch2: ) PM for the details.
