ESS AMT1A or ESS AMT1AM

Hey guys, I have the chance to grab either a pair of ESS AMT1A's or ESS AMT1AM's (ESS Monitors) and I'm not too familiar with how these speakers rank against each other. Also I've heard complaints about there being a midrange gap, is this as much a problem as people say it is? I'm planning on using these speakers pretty much 100% for home theater.

I have the "bookshelf" version of the AMT1a with a 12 inch woofer. The midrange sounds pretty good, but midbass suffers a little. A 12 inch bass driver can have a hard time covering frequencies above 500hz (IMHO), and mine are crossed over at 850hz. I don't always notice it, but sometimes I give a 2db boost around 500hz on my equalizer and that usually helps.

I'd say give them a listen before you buy. As for home theater use- make sure you give them power. I power mine with a JVC SR-400 mkII receiver that's adequate to say the least, but I think they would sound better with a beefier power amp.
