ESS and others

I was at the Durham, NC Habitat for Humanity today and saw three sets of speakers. The first was an old pair of Hitachi speakers that looked pretty crappy to me (especially for $40!) The next pair were some "Linear Dynamics" 12" 3-way speakers that also looked pretty crappy. Didn't see a price on them. They were made in USA, so that made me wonder a little. Finally there were some ESS speakers for $50. No Heil diaphragms here, just a 10" woofer and a small horn. They were later models. I would have considered the ESS if they were cheaper, but the others looked like nothing special. I did walk out with a nice Realistic receiver though.

Ess did make some nice non-heil speakers, and they usually had very nice and heavy cabinets, but the Heil models are the ones to go after, especially anything with a larger Heil.
 
ESS made the tempest, what I call the flatened heil. It has a radiator on the back. 10 inch if I remember.
They are excellent will give almost any oher speaker in its size category a run for its money. Worth the 50 if you ask me. However not sure if those were what you saw.

How bizarre, I have never encountered a pair of them in the thrifts before friday, at my local Habitat for Humanity!!! Hmmmmm Maybe it's an inside job??
 
Oh yea, thrifts move things from one store to another ... yea that's really gonna help your panasonic thrusters sell for 40 bucks a pair dude ... yea D/T people have no taste and no money, needs to be moved to mooresville where everyone is loaded and has the superior taste needed to appreciate these crap boxes.

Oh yea, it will probably get dropped by the crackheads moving it and then they get to write off the 350 bucks original price on the whole system. The full record player/8track/am and fm radio/cassette player and speakers.

Man I think I'm gonna get me some of that charity business. he made money on wall street, then he went into oil and made more $, then he really made his $ in charity. Yea.
My local GW does not move things that way I dont htink, but the rest of the "thrifts" do.

The ESS did not have a radiator on the back. Just a 10" paper cone woofer, a small horn tweeter, and an L-pad.

I can't go back for any of them, because it's a 5 hour drive from where I live and I went home today.
 
Oh anderson to raleigh - you drove right past my house in charlotte :-).

I bought my ess empests from a guy in raleigh ~3 months ago. Apparently he bought it from GW over there ~2-3 years ago for 30 or somehting like that. I paid 40 for it. He said, GW in that area now has become trashy and pricey. Charlotte isn't all that much better if you ask me. They wanted 30 bucks today for a toshiba 725 receiver get this - with a broken on off switch, not just knob missing - broken off, clean to the base. You'd struggle to turn it on with a pair of plyers. Yea and all of us know, we never listen to music wihtout a pair of vice grips, and who cares if the switch is worse wiht every use, we jus thave music 24/7 ... rock on ...
