ESS Elite

Hello, I recently purchased a pair of free standing Heil ATM dipole drivers. I love the sound and plan to use them in a DIY project. I also came across a pair of ESS PS-8H floor standing speakers on CL which ending up have one bad Heil driver. After searching the Internet I came across a video on Youtube that shows how to remove/replace the diaphragms from the magnetic enclosure. I purchased the correct diaphragm from SimplySpeakers and replacement was pretty simple.

I believe there is only three different diaphragms used, so If you're not sure which one to get, remove the original and take physical measurements with a ruler.

That's awesome on the video. Guess always someone that thinks someone else will want to see what they did, and they are correct. Thanks

Thanks for the tip on the video. I found it and it can’t look any easier. When I had my Heil out of the cabinet I set it aside and when I looked back at it the magnets had pushed apart from one another. The Heils in the Elite don’t have a metal strap across the top. The magnets are held in place from the bolts coming up through the bottom of the cabinet. When I take them out again I am going to loop the driver with a zip tie the driver before taking it out of the cabinet.

Question about the adjustment on the backs, is it a level adjustment for matching with other speakers? Or a presence/brilliance type adjustment? I now have the ability to amplify the heil's with their own channels.

Heil ess amt3's

I just purchased a pair of Heil ess amt3's. Cabinets and covers are mint. the woofers were replaced 25 years ago with Pyle drivers. Still was this a good deal?

I always though the ESS heils sounded harsh until I heard some AMT1 towers powered by a mac 2300. One of the most memorable audio events of my life in the 1970's. The only 'event' that impressed me to that level was an Ampzilla powering some Cornerhorns playing the live performance "At the end of the Proms" where 5000 folks, the BBC Symphony orchestra and chorus at Albert Hall doing Rule Britannia. Both times it gave me goose bumps.

Do yourself a "Solid" and lose the Pyle's!!!!!!!!!

Many good replacements available.

Heil ess amt3's

Can you explain why? I was led to believe they were the recommended replacements. I personally would choose JL audio.

Pyle's are more known for Car Audio and Pro Sound.
I feel the 3's would benefit from a higher quality replacement driver.
These can be VERY NICE speakers if done right.
Porkloin or Automojo can probably help out in this regard as they own the model.

??????????????????????????????????

Opened up my heil elites today, one is a bit off, thought to clean the reostat control, still should, but the diaphragm looks to have a bend that ought not to be there. Will call tomorrow and order from ESS, and HOPE they have this specific one, they do have quite a few listed on their site.

Look for the dimension specifictations. The longest one is the one for the "Great Heil" - the big dipole one. #689-1107.You Elite should have the same one that is on the AMT1 series, AMT3 and Transar.

I went ahead and check into it,the 1107 are what I need. I'm going to go ahead and replace both, the wrinkles will bring down the SPL level according to ESS. I mentioned I might rebuild the crossover, and the ess guy (can't recall his name) said he would supply me the crossover schematic, granted it looks like even a first timer like me could figure it out. I'm going to try and incorporate these into a recently acquired set of Chapman Shorties, which have a covered open frame top,so these will work perfect. I have 2 routes to go, use the original crossover and connect as recommended by ESS, this gives me the control I need to adjust the level to match the chapmans, or straight wire them in place of the chapman tweeters, which also have level adjustment but no crossover points. I see advantages to both methods. I'm leaning towards the 1st since the stock chapman tweeter is 8ohms at 89db while the heil's are 4 ohm at 92db.....all I know is if it sounds good and does not blow the amp I'm cool, but the chapmans already present a 4ohm load stock so certainly taxing my receiver.

Porklion, did you notice any differences when you replaced your diaphragms? Assuming you did.
