ESS Heil Bookshelves

Hi,
I own two pairs of ESS bookshelf speakers with Heil AMT tweeters.I'm
sure the crossovers are low quality but the drivers are of good quality.The woofers in my smaller pair are 8" jobs but have a 8 pound magnet.My other pair have 12 inch woofers with 15 pond magnets and some kind of equalizer/level control for the tweeter.The woofer in one speaker of the 12" pair is gone and the other needs the surround fixed.Is anyone working on improving ESS bookshelves?Heil tweeters seem to be all the rage again.I also want to make some new foam grills for the speakers since the origionals have disintegrated.Where can I buy the foam rubber for this?

I think if you can post the model numbers and/or pictures it would help. One of my current projects is rehabilitating a pair of the ESS AMT 10bs.
 
I also have a pair of 10b's, recently rehabilitated. Yours may be a different model, as mine have the original cloth grilles.

Pics would be nice.
 
Perhaps you could tell us the model numbers (or names, if any) of your ESS speakers. Do they have passive radiators in the back, or just sealed boxes, or ported boxes? Are the Heil AMTs the large ("Great Heil") type, or the surface-mounted smaller ones? Rectangular or circular 'faceplates" on the tweeters? ESS made a variety of models and several different AMTs, so a more detailed description (or photos) might help us to help you better.

Just out of curiosity, why do you say that "Heil tweeters seem to be all the rage again."? I love the things, but haven't noticed any big shift/trend to them beyond a few new manufacturers including them in new speaker models (since the patent protection on them recently expired). Have I been missing something?

Oh, and WELCOME TO AK! Sounds like you're off to a good start and will fit in well here, with ESS speakers to start out with. :yes:
 
alank, welcome to AudioKarma. There are a variety of sources for the edge foam. If you haven't done this work before, it's a good idea to get a kit. Several of our AK sponsors offer these kits.

Take careful measurements of the cone outer diameter and the inner ring where the foam overlaps the edge of the cone. Then do the same on the frame. Also note if the edge of the cone is a continuous slope or if it flattens out to the same plane as the frame.

Having these dimensions makes it a lot easier to match up a pair of replacement foams.
