ESS PS-9C troubleshooting

I recently purchased a set of ESS PS-9C secondhand. While they are mostly fine, one of the heil tweeters makes an odd flubbing/ buzzing/ clipping sound on certain bass notes. It is most noticable on kick drums and 808's, though it is not limited to this. The previous owner stated that they had upgraded the crossover, though it didn't sound like they used the speaker much.

I am powering the speakers with a Yamaha cr820. I am relatively new to the hobby, so any help troubleshooting this would be much appreciated.

open the cabinets and take a picture of the crossover and post it.
also, check for any lose connections on the crossover. at each joint, wiggle the wires a hint and see if anything might be loose.

I'd like to see what caps/resistors were used on the crossover when it was "upgraded"

There were no obviously loose connections in the crossover. Everything seems fairly solid

Update, upon opening up the working speaker, I found that the crossover was not fully identical. The malfunctioning one lacked a connection (purple wire) on the back of the board that was not present on the malfunctioning speaker.

glad you found the issue, just being a wire

also- just my 2 cents... spend the extra $$ and get Jantzen Superior Z caps for the crossovers. You will not be disappointed. get rid of those Daytons.

I've tried Daytons in my ESS monitors and was highly disappointed. another Ak'-er recommended the Jantzen Z caps and was hugely impressed.

Jantzen z and ESS go together nicely!
