Estimated value of my collection...help please

Here's my suggestion.


Instead of looking at all of this gear, and trying to test it all, start with a few pieces.

Grab one set of speakers, one cassette deck, and one receiver. Then, go to Radioshack and pick up (like other have mentioned) a few sets of RCA cables (they're the ones with a red and white plug on each end) and a roll of speaker wire.

Then, get one system setup. Cassette deck via RCA cables to receiver. Cut 2 pieces of speaker cable and connect them to the receiver. (be careful to hook negative to negative (black) and positive to positive (red).

Now, you can enjoy some tunes and play around with it a bit. Then, start trying out some of the other pieces.

Just my 2 cents.

A lot of us would consider it interesting to hook some of this stuff up and give it a listen. A lot of us would consider it torture to hook some of this stuff up and give it a listen. There probably is some interesting stuff in there and certainly some worth more than others. If you can find somebody close enough that would be willing to help you and you are interested in giving a few pieces a listen than take them up on it. I know I would love to help but I am about as far away as you can get, well, unless you want to spring for plane tickets...:D

AK is a great forum and has a diverse population of people with varied levels of interest all centered around listening to music. Many of us here myself included are of the scroungoid species. The scroungoid types are always looking for the pot of gold about to be thrown into the dumpster. Ultimately we want the TOTL Pioneer sx 1250 sitting at the Goodwill for 9.95. However we drag home a good many SX 450s for our bedroom systems our back up systems, our linen closet systems, our sister in law's system. Why? Well because if nobody does this than this really decent stuff ends up in the dumpster. Much of the stuff you have there is better in build quality and sound than anything you can get at Best Buy once it is up and running properly.

Was your relative of the scroungoid species? I know I was just emailing my brother the other day and said to him I don't know what you guys are going to do if suddenly kick the bucket. He said, "Thats' what Ebay is for!". I suspect that there are a number of items that aren't worth very much in the open market but were of value to your relative for other reasons. Just my perspective from where I sit and welcome to AK hope you stick around.
 
Hopefully an AKer close by will be able to assist in this project. IMHO, he should cull the best example of receiver, TT, speakers, etc. and set up a good starter system of his own...then dispose of the remainder in the best $$$ way possible. Have fun!

Edit: He mentioned a stash of vintage radios as well....now what did I do with my drool smilie?

I don't think anyone here is offended, Karma. You have been blessed/cursed with what many of us would consider a motherlode and didn't know where to start. If there is even one piece you like well enough to keep and use yourself, so much the better. As mentioned in my earlier post, there is only one component you have that I can comment on firsthand -- your Pioneer SA-900 integrated amp. It's an excellent unit and, if indicative of the rest of the lot, you could turn a handsome profit and/or make many audio collectors very happy. It all depends on how much time, effort and interest you wish to commit. I have found AK to be a very supportive, informative and entertaining site, and you will, too. Welcome aboard! :yes:

Hmm...no he was not of the scroungoid species. He was of the Im-Not-Sure-What-the-Best-is-but-this-seems-like-the-best-so-I-need-to-have-it species. Everytime something new caught his eye for some reason or another, he'd be off to buy it. He always had money burning a hole in his pocket and his think was electronics. I wish he would have collected stuff that didn't have so many knobs, buttons, wires, and holes.

Yes many vintage radios. Still things I know nothing about, but at least the only thing I have to plug in is the power cord. Old Hitachis, Sony, Panasonic, Howard Miller clocks. Transistor stuff, some only play AM though

Thank you. This may sound like a really stupid question, but what exactly is an integrated amp? and why is it so "excellent?"
 
Integrated both a Pre-Amp and Power-Amp into one unit . the Pre-Amp has all the controls and the Power-Amp drives the speakers .


A Receiver will have a Radio added .

Hi,
You could start a nice system with these components below; what you need now with these are, interconnects, speakers cables, CD/DVD player or/and a Turntable.
Down below you have the choice of two excellent Amps, your choice. As a matter of fact, you have more choice, but try those two first.
The suggested tuner is a very good one, but again you have more choices.

The speakers, only you can tell how they sound, try the suggested model, and if you don't like, switch.

I would like to be in your position having all these choices. You have a mixture of fair to excellent components, but even the one described as fair, are by no mean to be sniff at.

Now as far as pricing you equipment, Ebay, Audiogon, Craiglist, Canuck Audio Mart, and many other sites, are the place to look at, not here, and I don't mean to be impolite, just helpful.

from what you have there, the easiest receiver to hook up would be the yamaha cr-440. get some speaker wire and hook up a set of the pioneer speakers. if you get standard speaker wire the positive wire on each end will most likely have a white line going through it. make sure these are hooked to the positive terminals on both the receiver and the speakers. power it up and see if you get am/fm radio. you may want to get a cheap antenna and hook that up the same way as the speakers. if you get good tuner reception the unit is most likely in good working order, then you can try hooking up a cd player or a turntable with the rca cords that have been mentioned. after you understand how all that works you can move onto the "seperates" (integrated and tuners) you have - the pioneer sa and tx stuff.
try it out and let us know, i'm sure there's alot of guys who'd like to see how it works out for you, and at the very least you'll learn how to hook up some pretty decent gear.
