Ethical question: Destroy a healthy TT to make a DIY RCM? (w/pics!)

I donated a dump find, perfectly functional (and perfectly bland) Pioneer PL-512XD to Kevin Kennedy who turned it into a very cost effective record cleaner.

The real valuable piece from the Sanyo, as I see it, is the spindle in its own bearing. If I cut a platter from plywood or similar, I'd still have to figure a way to make a spindle and have it spin. it's looking like my RCM will be belt drive with the motor/drive belt from a bread machine somehow ending driving this Sanyo spindle.
