EV 12trxb in Wald cabinets?

I have a pair of Electrovoice 12TRXB triax speakers (16 ohm) that I am thinking about mounting a Wald speaker cabs. I picked up the Wald 3-way 15" woofer cabinets with functional drivers...actually very nice cabs...for $15 but the drivers are just pitifully cheap. The question becomes whether to go closed baffle or port (or even open back) these for the EV speakers. The cabinets are 24"X18"X14" external. Are these cabinets big enough for the EV triaxs? I will be driving them with a Scott LK-72 tube amp.

Not really, no. They need infinite baffles (huge sealed cabinets -- think closet-sized), open baffles, or big vented boxes for best results. You can see what EV recommended for them by perusing the nomograph in EV Tech Bulletin 10A:

(if that link doesn't bring it up, try this: http://www.electrovoice.com/searchresults.php?searchinput=Bulletin+10A&x=0&y=0)

Thanks for the response.

Having read the link you provided and also doing a little more homework on my own...it would take mods to these cabinets to work.

So..two choices..mod or not use. I think I will mod. Looking at the box construction...What I think I will do extend the front out 5 inches. That will give me room to play. I'm pretty good at playing with wood and have the stuff to do it.

Initial thoughts are to cut out the front panel...extend out the front using birch plywood and build a new front panel using birch as well. Build my reflex tunnel per Marquis specs. Then figure out what size height feet I need to mount underneath (plateforms). I have front covers with the Walds but my plan is to expose the 12trxbs in front.

Sounds like a lot of work but if you can do it and having the existing cabinets is, so to speak, enabling... go for it!

Please, if you're so inclined, show us the finished product, and let us know what you think of 'em.

Good luck!

I'm thinking about 1.5 to 2.0 hours woodwork. The finish will take longer. And of course, cheaper than building new cabinets.

Ideally, the cabinet for those should be around 8cu ft sealed. In that size cabinet, they should be relatively flat down to 50Hz and avoid any of the peaks in the bass and lower midrange region as happens with a ported/vented cabinet. I have mine in 4.5cu cabinets with a 4"ID x 5" rear port. They sound pretty good, but the peak in the bass is somewhat noticeable.

I have a in on a couple of altec seville's which appear to be pristine. Will decide tomorrow on course of action after looking at them. I do have a klipsch sub and I'm thinking about going surround...but only using stereo amps....no computerese to affect the sound. In any regard...I will probably follow your advice on modifying the Wald cabinets to match the EV speakers. In short, there are no rules on modifying the cabinets so I can make them any size I want...front to back. That may be the catch. This is my home office setup..my happy place.
