EV aristocrat build

i have a pair of 12TRXB incoming. seems the aristocreat is the preferred cabinet for these.

but theyre corner cabinets, and i wont have a corner to tuck these into any time soon.

so i have 2.5 questions:
1. is the aristocrat just as good out of the corners as it is in?

2. a)is there an equally good or better box to build that is not a corner cabinet and more suitable to be a few feet away from each wall?
b)if so, what is it?

thank you

If you don't have a corner, maybe this cabinet would be a reasonable alternative. Unfortunately there weren't Thiele/Small parameters available for those older Electro-voice speakers. If you could measure your drivers that would make calculations for the cabinet size much easier. Otherwise, try these:
thank you for the suggestion! this design is quite a bit different on the inside. unlike the aristocrat, this marquis has no dimensions.

do you know if the aristocrat is just as good out of the corners as it is in?

and do you know if this gives better sound/response than the aristocrat placed into the room away from the corners?

Cabinets designed for corner placement are just that. You won't get the best the drivers are capable of delivering in that corner-designed cabinet, by not placing them in a corner. Otherwise you'll have to use a cabinet that has more flexibility placement-wise. Don't try to put a square peg in a round hole.

I have a pair of Aristocrats loaded with SP12B/T35B's. They need corners. Low end, overall balance and some of the full range magic are effected when not in corners. With a window 10" away one of my corners isn't perfect but it's extremely better than not having a corner. E-V Marquis were designed to take advantage of wall placement with these drivers. Large speakers are a tough sell but the drivers themselves are easier to sell/ship etc. In my area it isn't unusual to find a pair of large empty cabs that were once filled with University, E-V or other similar drivers. They can often be had for much less than a Benjamin. If you haven't already, a FBM search for empty cabs might be a good place to start.

yea i been lookin. i do come across empty cabs as you mention but not quite nearby enough for a pickup. i was planning to build em unless i find something nearby first.

unfortunately, the marquis manul gives no measurements like the aristocrat manual:
but this thread covers the matter pretty good. im hoping itll have all the dims

do the marquis go against a wall or just along a wall?

Hey, EV SP drivers are wonderful at fitting very well into into so many different types and sizes of cabinets. Its easier to find a pair of cabinets you like and go that route. Paul Klipsch used SP12b's in his very first Heresys in the 1950s. So, small works

As far as Aristocrats in corners, you can do that too if you'd like to. Just build a free standing corner. I've seen that done more for Klipschorns. I found pics on the net for ideas, not a big deal. Don't give up, there's always a way.

I know, right. Adds another cool design possibility. And the Aristocrat is such a stunning design both visually and sound wise. Its a tough one to give up.

Whatever you build, build it out of 5/8" or 3/4" ply instead of the 1/2" EV used.

Corner speakers are always worth changing your life to find a way to use (or make) corners. In certain cases, nothing says you can't invert & hang them from ceiling corners where practicable.

If opting for Marquis, suggest an angled riser or cleats (about 7 deg works ~10 ft) so the HF doesn't shoot at your knees. Alternatively, you might tip the baffle instead (like the Baronet or like the 50's University designs), but it's more/different work.

Edit: (Re outboarding part of a corner, parenthetically, that's functionally what Regencies are--rev1 Marquis-types except for 15's with the rear and side grafted on)

Lordy, there's no universe where Biggles can power those. Leaves my system in the dust. Pow!

Probably came-off wrong, but yeah. Given business-responsibilities amidst the competition when hi-fi was exploding in the early 50's, it might've been sensible to use 1/2".

For existing 1/2 cabs, IMO the biggest bang is on remaking a thicker baffle but grille frame clearance keeps it from getting thick-thick unless you re-do that and/or move the cleats as well. Absent that, it's easier to make a rib brace either across (which can be screwed into from the front) or a stick brace straight back to the angled duct pieces (working through the hole to locate/mark). The tops take a thumping too, and are considerably easier to brace with a single rib.

It depends on personal tastes and what sort of driver one uses. The "B" models of factory drivers aren't as bad that way as the big-magnet models. And many people like them just the way they are.

Nicest work I've seen was by AK'er chadrick who outboarded the HF and went active on the filter. There's another little stick brace across the rear as well. He has the big-motored "Super 12" and reported noticeable clean-up.

Also recall a guy from the k-board that transplanted a Klipsch sub driver and he just doubled-up the 1/2" and used about 2 lbs of screws and half-gallon of glue :)

Here's another pdf with a paragraph of suggested starting points for placement.

Here's a photo of one of my Burgundy Cats(not so perfect corner) after adding shelves to 10" side boards. Helped immensely to get them off the carpet and the T35B's closer to ear level.

There are some great ideas in this thread!
