EV Electro-Voice Sentry 1A ... Sorta ...

Chip - HP

Super Member
This morning I ran across a single Electro-Voice Sentry 1A ... well that's at least what I thought (hoped) ... upon closer inspection, it appears that the cabinet, badge and crossover are the only original parts.

For future reference, the triangular cabinet dimensions are 37.25"H x 24"W x 16.5"D x 21.75" on the angle.

The 5.5" horn shaped tweeter has the numbers ... 106 824 7595 ... on the back.

The 12" woofer has the numbers ... 810 7694 199 ... on the back.

Since it's my understanding that the number for Electro-Voice is 649 ... these don't appear to be original drivers.

Magic Marker. :)
EV almost never used "pretty" drivers in their own cabinets. The fancy magnet covers, shiny badges, etc. were usually non-existant in them. The numbers may be nothing more than production notes, or it's possible that at some point they went back to EV for repairs.

Oh, by the by...Electro-Voice's service center here in Arkansas is quite happy to re-cone and repair any of their old drivers they have parts for. A friend recently had two 70's era 15" drivers re-coned there. The lady who did it had been working for EV for decades!

At some point this speaker was the property of The University of Wisconsin - Whitewater ... someone at the University added the magic marker notations on the woofer ... on the outside of the cabinet is a small metal badge with ... The University of Wisconsin - Whitewater ... and an inventory or identification number.

Since the consensus is that they are EV drivers (thanks for the input), I pulled the two drivers and the crossover ... removed the badge and the grill cloth ... and put the "remains" on the curb.

Last year I picked up a single Sentry II with very similar drivers. The woofer looks a lot like yours but is marked 810 4432. Same whizzer cone & basket assy. The tweeter on mine was a t35 as well. I didn't have space so I tossed the cab after I parted out the drivers.

Funny thing is my Sentry II came from a UW surplus shop here in Madison. It would be weird if either of us found the mate for our speakers.

Hi,

A note: The EV Sentry series speakers were a very common fixture in broadcast control rooms as main monitors into the early 1980's. AM stations likely used only one as they were mono.

What did you not like about the cabinets?

Since the consensus is that they are EV drivers (thanks for the input), I pulled the two drivers and the crossover ... removed the badge and the grill cloth ... and put the "remains" on the curb.

I have a pair of those same type cabinets and they are built very industrial. They also have a ported tunnel for loading and were used in many installations where they used the wall as a extension of the port.

I don't have my original drivers, but I do plan to use some other drivers in them down the road.

While I never found the mate to my single EV, something more interesting showed up the last time I allowed myself to visit the university's surplus shop. If you guessed a pair of EV Sentry 1As, give yourself a cigar. Mine aren't anywhere as nice as the OP's. The veneer looks like it had been left in a sauna but in a previous life I'm sure they looked quite nice.

I mentioned said find to another audio geek and he mentioned he had bought a pair of EV Sentry IVs at the surplus shop years ago. According to a friend of his from the university, the UW was a big EV customer. He mentioned delivery trucks filled to the top with EV speakers!
