Any thoughts out there on mating up a classic EV SP15a (soom to be modified with a 400 watt vc kit, foam surrounds, etc) with an Altec 511 horn?

I won a pair off Ebay today for stupid money! (

The EV woofer has the upper extention I want and the 511 the coverage I want along with 800 hz low end! What horn drivers would be best used here?

Thanks for any thoughts/ help here.

Sure, why not?

Compression drivers? Seems there are many to choose from nowadays. I'm partial to Altec-GPA 902s but it seems many others are just as good. In any event you're familiar with the sound of Altec compression drivers.

Why not consider an EV 1823-1824M mid driver and a tweeter; an EV ST-350 for instance.

BMS 4550 w/ Z19 XO + the requisite additional attenuation.

800 Hz? GPA 902 + N800-8K plus T-filter.

800Hz and nasty? JBL 2425/6H + 3110A.

How about the new GPA 802?....:thmbsp:

You may find the magic Altec midrange a bit lacking with EV woofers though....

SP15 with 2.5" voice coil can be modded to the woofer I used in the "BiggiEwave" speakers. Uses a DL15 voice coil, Eminence cone and felt dustcap. That would obviously also work great with an Altec horn.

If you're looking to do this on the relative cheap- I can say, the Selenium D220Ti worked great on 511s, using the standard E-wave crossover as a starting point. That, plus the modded EV woofers, would be most likely a "slam-dunk".

If you want to use the stock Altec crossover topology, something like the GPA902 (as Zilch recommended) would be the thing...

Gordon.

Appreciate the reply and information Gordon. I have a line on 400 watt vc and recone kit. Did you use a foam surround or go with the standard pleated?

I really like the idea of the 902 but are pricey! I have used the 220's but find them a bit thin and sometimes harsh. I suppose the old reliable 802'8 would still work?

Thanks for your thoughts here.....

I think those old 802s are some of altecs best, especially when mated to the 511s. And we all know what those sp-15s are capable of. That mix of components are gonna need a large enclosure, sounds like a fun project, keep us posted.

I have some BIG 8 cu ft cabs that I took the 15: out of that I might reuse- debating though as they are made from plywood and ting badly! Then again I also have a nice set of Kappa 9's that are empty awaiting a project- I could modify those into something pretty nice with the backs extended out and the baffles rebuilt. I hear the gears starting to click in my head!!!

Guess now I need to find some drivers.........will keep us posted here on the project potential

The cone I used had a pleated surround. The reduced cone mass and lower damping of the pleated surround, might give more extension in the mids, compared to the foam surround. With an 800 Hz crossover, the foam might work just fine... but, I wouldn't use it with an E-wave (effectively around 1500 Hz or so).

If you don't want the Selenium, the B&C DE250 is somewhere between the price of the Selenium and a 902... and would definitely have more high-end extension compared to an 802. And, it's a bolt-on driver, which would mount right up to the 511.

Gordon.

I will look into the b&C, what you know about these?

Radian drivers (like the 475PB referenced) are killer good. I mean, like world-class good. They're based on the Symbiotik design from Renkus (who designed the concept originally for Altec, and later used it at Renkus-Heinz).

I've used the little-brother (the 450, IIRC) on the back of a coaxial 8" speaker, in my really exotic big-speaker design (LCY ribbon, Radian coax, dual TC Sounds 10" and triple TC Sounds passive radiators). It's a real performer. You will need to probably do your own crossover tweaking (I don't think anyone's used them in any of the E-wave thread designs yet), but I don't see why those couldn't be made to sound excellent.

Gordon.

Thanks Gordo- looks like a wave review!! I like the spec I saw on those as well, hope it will combine with the 511 well!
