Ever heard of SPICA TC-50......?

I have never heard of these speakers....till today.
This afternoon on the local cl these spica tc-50 came
up for sale at $20. So for $20 what the heck. Called
the seller and said I'd take them sight unseen. So
before work I went and picked them up. Durring work
I researched these little gems and the more I read the
more excited I got to get off work, get home and
give them a run. I'm listening to them right now all, an
I can say is they far exceed my expectation. Best 20 spot
ever I spent. Orignal owners, with orignal box. I have
them hooked up to a NAD 3155 amp, great reproduction.

Great speakers. I still want a pair. They image extremely well. Excellent sound and an even better price. I looked at them when they were still sold new, but I ultimately bought Magnepans instead.

Yes. Very good speakers with limited low end. I had a pair in the early 90's. They were touted to compete against the LS3/5a and came into the ballpark.

Thanx for the info fellas, these rival my canton ergo dc-32's
in the imaging dep. & accuracy. But lacks in the bass dep.
Overall en exellent book shelf speaker.

Thanks for the pics. I had a craigslist buyer over about a week ago that had a pair of these, and ran them with tubes with excellent results.

Gets me thinkin' :scratch2:

The limited low end was due to the cabinet and not the woofer. My old Rega 2's use the exact same audax woofer and the bass goes plenty deep... Though they don't image as well as the TC-50's. Not many do, Great little speaker .

Does anyone know if these should be level with the listener's ears, or below them so the drivers' output is aimed more directly at the ears?

Either way, it seems like with other speakers that have their drivers (not just tweeters) operating at an angle like this Spica e.g. Wilson's five-figure WATT Puppy sold right now, certain Canton models in the 80s and Bose's  601, reflections from the ceiling may have some effect on their sound.

Listen to 'em level with your ears - not lower. The tweeter's effective output response is flat with the listerner's positionn level with the speaker. If you lower it, its response will be greater (i.e. more highs = sibilance). You can see this effect via measurements taken by Pete Basel. A link to his site is available at the link I shared in an earlier post.

A great speaker -- no real low bass, but what do you want from such a tiny box? A subwoofer might help, but it would need to be a good one, and very carefully integrated so as not to screw up the imaging and depth that Spicas can produce, with good amplification. I think even the low end is dependent on both amplification and type of music you listen to -- jazz, folk, and not really loud stuff sounds pretty well balanced to me with a good amp.

I am currently using my TC-60s in my bedroom elevated 23" and 3 feet from the rear walls. Powered by a Dynaco ST35/Eico HF85 combo. Just can't seem to top this combo for low level realism with detail and impact. Imaging and depth are the equal to my ESL-57s in the living room and are very listenable for hours. Congrats on a real find.

Is the TC 60 the conventional box with the (really excellent) little peerless polypropylene cone tweeter? How about a picture?

Nat. Slightly larger, same slanted format, Audax tweeter I believe. These are ported in the rear and specs claim lows to high 30s which is a stretch. Mine are yellow oak veneer with bi-wire set up. When my daughter gets back from her trip I can post a few pics I guess. A friend's TC-50 with a similar set up sounds equally great with an unreal female voice presentation and actually motivated me to acquire these. You are correct about these not being ideal for loud music but for near anything else they're great.

Thanks Carl.
