Lately,while perusing the slack record shops here,and from what I buy there is a greater percentage of female artists singing roots music than male singers.

Case in point my selection consists of the likes of

Ruthie Foster

Be Good Tanyas

That mclachlan woman

Natalie Merchant

And on and on,if you go to a store most male artists are rap or hip-hop.
I know the Future Shops promote the stuff that sells but what happened to the good ol songwriter? the likes of Dylan,Alvin,Clark are few and far between.

Yes the ability to write songs as well as play or sing an instrument is what to me seperates the amateur from a professional artist.
I never was a Dylan or Neil Young fan. But these guys have the ability to write good lyrics and tunes.
I am a fan of Ritchie Blackmore, Kitaro, David Arkenstone and Yanni for the same reasons. They artists are composers first and musicians second. And they write some deadly songs. By like all artists not every painting is a masterpiece.
 
Dunno know about that, Alan- are you sure it isn't just what you gravitate to?

Yes, I have noticed the same thing Alan. Seems most of the new disks I buy anymore are female singer/songwriters and they are a damn talented bunch.

There are some very talented new male artists out there as well. Look at Jeffery Foucault, Scott Carter, Rollie Tussing, Scott Moody, and Slaid Cleaves for example.

But there is just something so relaxing about a soulful female voice at the end of a long day ;)
