picked this up today. it looks like its brand new... I had no Idea what to expect and when I got it hooked up it honestly stopped me in my tracks. I've owned a few pieces of and honestly never understood the Sansui appeal.
Those days are over... this old tin can is Legit.

Nice score.
Those Nichicon caps are insane.
Ive never heard a Sansui before.
What do you like about the sound?

Oh, this is for you....

Congrats!
The last "Hoo-Raa"!, in the receiver wars of the 70's. Nice score.
I really think Sansui won the receiver wars. Those big G series receivers are beasts.

Another vote for best receiver of that era. Sansui G. Second place Pioneer 50 series. Both superb. Both have very special sound. But I have to admit, I like the Sansui just a little bit more. Congratulations!!! Now find you some KEF 105s to go with it.

Also, these guys are getting rarer, and they are truly historic pieces. Save your pennies and get it properly recapped and serviced for longevity and value.

Thank you for that question! I used to have a kind of personal vernacular when i would try to describe wine to my customers. I think this might be the same.
First keep in mind that I only had about 15 minutes before it went into protection mode but let me say this -it literally made me stop dead in my tracks as i was walking back to my listening chair after i hit play.
The sound was COMPLETE. - every sound, whole and present. Full, lush and rich; confident and unapologetic
It was also insanely present and alive. Absolutely commanding with out a hint of being offensive. (Like grandpa yelling at you to hold still while he zipped up your winter coat so you could go outside with him and play in the snow while he shoveled the drive way). ya man - it was great.

and you are right about the "special sound" those signature sounds are/ were an artform of their own. Lancing, Klipsch, McIntosh, KEF, Carver... they all have their own. What a treat.

Not merely nice, but yeah, it's regarded as The Best Receiver of the era.

I love(d) my MAC-4100, but it's no match for these 'G" series Sansui monster receivers, as many of the old guard @ AK refer to such receivers.

My bone a Sansui G-8000 came a little over two years ago. It was located perhaps 8 miles from me as the crow flies. Roads in the mountains are not crow like. The receiver went into and out stereo, but when in stereo sounded great. Bought it and once back home started checking it out. All it needed was a good cleaning and working the pre amp power amp switch on the side back and fourth. It holds it own against Pioneer SX-1250 sound wise. Have listen to the Pioneer for many years and really enjoy it, but the Sansui just has a little nuance that pleasantly surprises is the best I can put it. The tuner pulls in FM very well. The Sansui has been joy and turntables no matter if a Dual, Pioneer or Technics have all sounded rich, full and true. I hope once you get your G-9000 repaired it charms you and keeps a smile on your face.

I am absolutely not a receiver guy but I used to correspond with an AKer who said that the poweramp section of the G-8000 was one of the nicest sounding power amps available.

thanks for the comments everyone. Kind of glad so many agree... sometimes i have the ability to exaggerate to myself... so to speak so it is nice that my impression is validated. It is currently in for service so looking forward to giving it a go when i get it back. I have a pair of Kenwood L-07mkII's being rebuilt top to bottom by a phenomenal tech down in Oregon - It will be interesting to do a side by side comparison between the two systems.
