Any or all the reasons mentioned in this thread are valid maybe it was all these reasons and maybe a couple we don't know of.
I still think it is/was sales cannibalization myself perceived or real or even the future prospect of it . I tend to think the Fire HD and older models likely would be Chinese made. Maybe someone here has a kindle Fire HD box that says where it's made who knows .
There is no doubt that Wal Mart has the wherewithal and the money to come out with their own tablet . I'm sure any number of manufactures would love to have that contract or maybe not Wall Mart being Wall mart and all. But then they could just buy
their own factory anywhere on the globe and assemble them if they felt they needed to.
Could be Hon Hai Precision AKA Foxconn Makes the kindles after all they are the worlds largest electronics manufacturer. We don't have much of an infrastructure or supply chain left for volume production of affordable things like that here.In fact the HP box I'm typing on is a Foxconn product. Foxconn being an ODM does not disclose their customers without permission.
Only Electronics we have left of any scale here are industrial, transportation medical, scientific, aviation ,marine, infrastructure, and military products and Motorola. and maybe some others I forgot . You can also bet if Kindles were US made Amazon would use that as a selling point . Foxconn even makes the Microsoft X box and the PS3.
You have to look real hard to find US made consumer electronics ,PC or personal tech gear not much there.
short of some boutique brands stuffed with overseas parts. just saying.
