Just yesterday the mailman delivered a heavy box of about 125 jazz CDs won at auction for about 40 cents a disc.
It turns out to be a wide mix, between LaserLight-type collections of old masters like Louie Armstrong and Duke Ellington, pop vocals like Connick and Buble, some bubblegummy "smooth" jazz (and it seems I can really enjoy Fourplay when in the right mood for it, who knew), some dixie, straight ahead piano trios, torch lounge stuff, quasi profound electronic fare for aging yuppies holding chardonnay glasses. A mix of major and minor labels and a disproportional share of amateurish looking ones I'd never heard of. And at first I'm thinking, no way this is from an estate sale, which had been my first guess, because this isn't any one person's taste.
And I still haven't even lifted everything out of the box yet to look at it, but just now ran across this sticker on one of the jewel cases, which sheds some light:
So maybe all of this came from a public radio station.
Anyway. I'm in for some fun for a while. There will probably be some dross, but I'm looking forward to lots of discovery. Right now it's a rather abstract-sounding piano trio, "The Aperturistic Trio" - album named "Truth and Actuality" - first track "Dance of the Macrocosmic People." On the Inner Circle Music label. And ... yeah, I like it....
